PST rivet hunters thread.
on: July 30, 2008, 10:14:23 PM
Being that one of the hardest tools to find is an early riveted PST and the main method of finding one is squinting at blurry pictures on eBay I figured we could have a thread wherein we could all squint at the blurry pictures and try to help determine if the PST in question is riveted or not. Don't share the auction, just save the picture and host it somewhere so we can all take a look.

My first two examples:

What do you guys think? Cross referencing Bob's excellent pictures I think the first one might be but the second one definitely not. Note in the second picture the "USA" space on the plier pivot. The riveted PSTs don't usually have this so that may be the best indicator for us.

Good Luck!

As some one who spends far too much time doing precisely this - I think it's an excellent idea spoon. I'll definitely take part - good thinking  :salute:

I used to come here a lot.

Good idea micky!

Here's some more useful posts for us hunters (thanks in no small part to Bob's diligence in the matter):

Early Rivet PSTs

More pics; reply #3

First Production PST

I'm studying the pictures pretty closely and it appears the plier stampings may be our best identifier.

Probably riveted. Note the big font, drop point blade, wispy thin profile of the plier head.

Different auction, same clues as mentioned above.

They're out there gentlemen. :)

Got mine in the mail today, here's the auction picture for reference.

Note the plier pivot and large font on the handle. Although the large font is not necessarily an indicator of rivets it is one of the easier things to see.

Another note: State surplus auctions appear to have the most riveted models for sale as of late. I recommend adding a few different surplus sellers to your "favorite sellers" folder on eBay and then checking them every few days as opposed to just doing a blanket search for "PST" or "Leatherman."

The state surplus sellers have some great items but I have yet to find one that posts outside of the US  >:(
