Replaced the broken backspring in the Wengerinox 1908 and filled the holes in the scales with scrap material then redrilled them

Ta!

This is my joint top favourite SAK, along with my modded Tom Sawyer - It's the apogee of design, asthetics and utility IMO

I'm a bit disappointed with my Wenger SI, to be honest.  I like the classic looks and the fact it's a 1978 model, but the quality just isn't as good as my other Pioneers.  The springs, liners and scales don't line up on the back, and the pressed edges of the tools are rough and unfinished.  The modern tumbled tools on the current Pioneer are much nicer, and the nice sharp edges of my old cross Pioneer are even better.

That's a real shame! Is this a wider quality problem with a particular year?

The hollow rivet is the best bit for me. As much as I love the other Alox models (especially the Farmer) I find the lanyard attachment too uncormfortable for lengthy use but I also think a lanyard is an important part of the knife. Hmmmm

I don't know -  I've not got anything of a similar age to compare it to.  I'd guess that quality improved over time with the addition of other process like tumbling of the stamped blades, but it might just be an issue with older, worn tooling or QC problems related to large quantities of knives being produced for military issue.

I was reading the other day that we assume military gear will be top quality but in fact it's produced to be as cheap as possible within the tolerances of the spec. I didn't think Wenger would have such quality issues though.

Between this and the Spirit thread the humble SAK has taken a bashing!

I have no complaints though - best product ever!

It seems that a lot (though not neccessarily all) of military equipment is a commodity that's built to a price.  The issues I have with my SI don't affect its function in anyway either - it still does everything my Pioneers do, just not quite as nicely.

Most American military equipment is buit by the lowest bidder.

Not a system I use nor is it one I would suggest you do.

If I wanted something from the lowest bidder I might end up with a Gerber.  :pok:

Or a SOG. What a great concept that failed to evolve past the initial "napkin design", and is built to the lowest standard, by the lowest bidder.

SAK Guy, that Boker blade looks just like a Wenger large blade - is it just a coincidence or a mod?
