Help ID knives & Info - Sterling & Suleyman Bursa
on: November 04, 2013, 12:41:36 AM
I found these knives in a toolbox of my uncles.  There is some info on the Sterling in this thread
http://forum.multitool.org/collector's-forum/wwii-aussie-made-army-knivesbaks/

However, I can find no info on the Suleyman knife other than it is probably Turkish.

Thanks
Mark

First off, welcome to the forum. :salute:

I think it's an old Albanian or Turkish army knife. I see them advertised as such and have found some mention of them being made for a long time in the town/region of Bursa, Turkey. We have a few Turkish members here so maybe they can offer a bit more info on them.

Thanks, I had looked but did not find any info on the knife.

The one my uncle had would be at least 40 years old as he had a bad stroke in the early 70's.

The second knife is a military(probably Navy)issue rigger's knife. The marlinspike was used to tie and untie knots in heavy rope while the sheepfoot blade was utilized to cut through it.The can opener is self-explanatory.The arrow between the two D's indicates military issue.
The only Sterling Cutlery Co I could come up with was a mark used by McIlwine,Linn,&Hughes who were a New York wholesaler operating between 1896 and 1914.However those knives they imported were made in Germany and the time line doesn't fit. Your knife looks to be made either during or just prior to WWII.
Perhaps someone on the board who resides in Australia will be able to give out some info.

Bursa is a huge city in Western Anatolia, first capital of the Ottoman Empire since 1453, conquest of Istanbul. Also it is famous with its knives. Süleyman is the maker of the knife, i think he is a famous blacksmith of its age. This type of naming is common for local Turkish knife makers, city or town and blacksmith's name.
