Weird and Wacky Multi-tools.
on: June 07, 2014, 06:22:47 AM
Most people are well aware of the plier based multi-tool, and even the knife based multi-tool. However, there are some weird and wacky designs out there, especially from China. Hammer and wrench based multi-tools have always held a special place in my collection as I do like the strange and odd tool design. What follows are some of my strangest and I think, most interesting multi-tools in my collection.

It is hammer time. Here is a nice hammer multi-tools that has a nice weight to it. It also have a set of pliers and a nail puller on the posterior end.

this one is of a similar design to a plier based tool. these tools feature a Phillips on the backside that flips out, and these types of tools usually have a flat driver which pivots out on the umm...er...front-side.

Now for something completely whacked out, how about a mini hatchet hammer combo?

This one is a real looker with that wooden scale and everything blacked out. Very mall ninja worthy this.

Keeping in line with the notion that some tools are created more equal than others on sheer absurdity, this tool features an adjustable wrench with the hammer. Got to have that  hammer function.

What makes this one something special, it also have a nice folding out pair of pliers.

Got to love what comes out of China. I mean, they sure come up with some interesting tools...and the best part, they actually produce and sell them. This fine example features needle nose pliers, along with the hammer and nail puller.

A fairly dedicated adjustable wrench multi-tool.

Another hammer pliers combo tool.

I think of all the tool variations out there, the mini hatchet models are the most daft.

Another variations of the adjustable wrench hammer plier thingy.

Probably the most bizarre design I have, is this monstrosity which is permanently kept open via an internal spring. The handles are removable, and no, you do use the pliers in that configuration.

A more stylish hammer plier combo. This one is more in the art deco style.

A sheffield camping tool. Yes, another mini hatchet hammer combo tool.

A stunning wooden handled hammer plier combo tool.

The same tool lacking the beautiful wooden handles.

How about a Digi Tire multi-tool?

Digital tire pressure gauge, hidden glass breaker, and a set of folding tools.

A french made Seaboard adjustable wrench tool.

Loggerhead Bionic tool. Definitely counts as a strange multi-tool.

I have always liked the look of tools with wooden handles. This hammer based tool is a bit special because it also features a ratchet.

Yes, definately fits on the weird side. How about a multi-tool flashlight?

Another hammer based multi-tool.

Chako,

Great collection, being in China, I have seen a fair share of these tools, but you are probably the first I know to collect them systematically.

This is not a comprehensive list by any means. I have a few more examples in my collection.

Some of these are quite high on the quality index.

Comis, I have been known to collect everything systematically.  :D

That's a great collection. And some interesting combinations. Some of the combos look like they seriously sacrifice functionality, but then some of them look like decent ideas. I've never seen an adjustable wrench/hammer combo before, but that doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Thanks for sharing!  :tu:

Those are kind of pricey if I remember correctly. $100 shipped if not more. So far I only remember positive reviews from people who've tried one.

Chi, do you have any experience with those?

A happy combination.  I like the wire-cutter and potato-chip slicer.
A positive improvement over the German / GI folding shovels.
If the materials and manufacturing are of sufficient quality it might be a good tool.

I guess a weird and wacky multi-tool thread wouldn't be complete without a mention of the Wenger Swiss Business Tool. I wrote about them back in 2011 here.

I really like some of those bottle opener box wrenches.  Would like LM or Gerber or SOG to do something like that.

Thanks to Chako of this thread, I totally have forgotten about this shovel...and am in process of getting hold my favorite cousin in China.  In fact, I remembered there were a few shovels I always wanted to get, and am glad I have more than one favorite cousin. >:D :D

How well does the hammer hold up on those multi tools? I like the concept but I'm afraid constant pounding would be hard on the tool.

Epic film - use the shovel to dig in the dirt all day, then use it to cook dinner.
I must admit that I want one though

Some of these are built like tanks. Others, no so much. :D

With that said, a dedicated hammer is the only way to go.

Here's a 'Handy Boy Combo Tool'. Back when I was a kid various dealers were selling this a 'Ski Trooper' or 'Paratrooper' tool.
