I just grip the blade in soft jaws in a vice so only the tang sticks out then gently bend the tang with some pliers. I do worry about them snapping but the Vic steel is quite ductile.

Yup the blade tip can break off, but if beding form the base youd have to bend like 45 degrees to get it to snap.   I have tested springs and they will bent 90 degrees without breaking.

I did take the whole thing apart. To dye the plastic parts, I made a double boiler and boiled Fiebing's black oil dye with the plastic pieces immersed for several minutes. It is unnecessary to take the lens out of the magnifying glass. I attempted this with spare parts first because it took me a few tries to get the timing worked out so that plastic mag glass holder didn't warp or crack. Once the technique was perfected, the results were great and the dye actually absorbed into the pores of the plastic, so it will not come off. The mini screwdriver was much easier to dye. Just as a warning, there's some pretty nasty fumes that come off of the dye when it boils and the dye is flammable, so of course I would not recommend you do this process and I am not responsible for any damages or injuries that may occur from any such attempt.

Yeah I definitely want to try something else, not sure what yet, preferably something else easy and cheapish. A compact with the Phillips mod looks like it would be pretty useful too. Eventually I'd like to do something like a Huntsman but with pliers instead of scissors if that's even possible?

It's very possible. If you get hold of a Champ or a Swisschamp you can remove the layers you don't want and re-peen it using the same pins. Quite an easy process (as long as you don't screw up and/or lose the bushings) ask me how I know.

Since you're in the UK the DofE model is readily available - that's almost a compact with phillips, if you don't mind the round-nosed blade.  Someone recently posted a nice re-profiling of the blade to a sheepsfoot shape, I can't find the post at the moment though.

Huntsman with pliers instead of scissors (or Camper + pliers if you prefer) would certainly be possible.  As far as I can tell, that combination has never been a standard model so it would be an interesting mod.  The Motorist is the nearest former production model that combines pliers and wood saw I think, but that also has the scissors.

Handyman would also be a good starting point, a bit cheaper than a SwissChamp but you don't get the plus scales.

Ok, finally got a chance to work on my sak Zermatt sheaths/pouches, since the wife is home and the kid is in school. I'm just about half way done, and the wife falls asleep for a nap.. I'd keep going but the next step is to put holes in the flap like the one in the background, and that requires the Dremel, and well, that makes noise and I don't want to wake her,, I could use a punch, but that's too much work, beside I shouldn't be doing anything without supervision. So I guess the timing was right on..

Ok, got a little time again today to work on the pouch/sheath, didn't finish both but both got drilled out, and the one did get finished! I ran into a few problems, like for some reason they were so dry they were cracking so I gave them a little tlc, and since they were dry as I drilled them I had stuff piling up and had to remove it before moving on to the next hole. I didn't have this last time on that other sheath you see in the pic.. Anyway here's a pic, you can see both drilled out, and then the blue one finished. I did come up with a name, who else is a marvel comic and is blue?? Come on,, he's an X-man? I'll give you a hint, he's big, just like the champion+ that's going in this sheath..

Found these for zipper pulls to add to the sak's when done, the guy even threw in a side release clip in. I might even change out the zipper pulls on my edc bag, there all now black but with a reflective strand rather then a red or blue, and since the bag is all black and red this might go better?

I looked into it, but the hook would need filing back to fit and I don't have the tools or the time at the moment. Or the hook with the file. Maybe one day I'll redo it with the hook.

Aside from having 2 awls I'm really pleased with the outcome.
