I will have put some work into that.  This was a bit of  hodgepodge of modified extra parts.

hi all,

just finished modding my beloved mini champ so i wanted to brag about it :). i'm not done yet (scales need some minor tweaks and i plan to acid etch the tools but i don't have the acid yet).

so, here's the list of mods:
  • m1.8 screws instead of pivots (had to widen the holes on all tools and springs a bit)
  • custom designed 3D printed scales: front side has the compartments for both the tweezers and toothpick and additional one for a pin/needle, back side has pen
  • removed the ruler/flat screwdriver and cuticle pusher
  • nail file modified to have the flat screwdriver instead of nail cleaner (i plan to also mark the ruler on the back side)

future plans involve darkening the tools with acid, maybe adding some small magnifier, improving the scales design (pen doesn't move as easy as on the original, toothpick is a bit loose) and maybe ordering a 3D print in metal from shapeways (this is printed in PLA and works pretty good as i carried a "testing" PLA scale for last three months and haven't had any issues with wear). i'm also thinking of removing small blade and citrus peeler (to basically get a manager SAK) as i have a small scalpel on the keychain for precise cuts but i just love that small blade.

Any reason for using the M1.8 screws and enlarging the holes?
UNF #0-80 is used more here on the forum as a good fit.
And I think M1.6 screws fit quite decently as well?

Sometimes you make a SAK mod and think “why did I dilly d___ around and make this piece of c___”. Well tonight I think I got this one right. After making a red version of the YeoTimeKeeper and taking it on vacation to Germany I decided I wanted to make black version. So I snagged an extra black TimeKeeper off eBay and went to work.  Notice in last pic the difference in the all blacked out implements vs the standard implements. Like this one.

Here is what it took to make the mod.  I wasn't willing to take it apart so I did my best with what I had on hand.

Thank you for posting this. Do you think there’d be any issue with using the pivot point on the standard 91mm knife as a template instead of the bottle/can opener? Maybe there isn’t enough material to start with?

I honestly don't know.  These were from a 91mm, so it is plausible.  I have also used a thick piece of aluminum in the past to accomplish the same task.

Gotta get me a Swiss Tech scalpal!

Slightly less technical but I made something similar to this previously and promptly lost it. It’s a openerless compact! A bit weird I know but I was surprisingly attached to it hence the new improved plus scale version. Had to use a blade I had been messing about profiling as it was all I had left but actually quite like it and it retains the original nail nick too!

And since I'm in 3-layer mood, here's a 91mm clone of Syph's great invention of the driver layer.

Super like this one, any additional work to get the phillips in place of the can opener or is it just a drop-in?

The Phillips tang has to be reworked to match the spring (I used a blade layer spring). Since the Phillips is a bit wider than the spring (which itself is wider than the bottle opener) a few washers/spacers are needed in various places. Last, I used a backspring awl (again with washers to adjust the width) to maintain spring tension.

Hello, new here and trying to post. I am new to modding, this is one of my 2 layers. Small blade and saw on one layer and an integrated pocket clip. I am in the process of making some leather scales for it.

New to this site and modding. I carried a swiss champ for a while, but it was too bulky. Carried a rambler for a bit, but too small. I made an 84mm blade less 3 layer. Standard opener layer, but I ground an edge on the inside of the can opener. I only used my rambler blade for opening boxes and packages, so this should take care of that need. Cut down the file from my champ to put in place of the magnifying glass. Modded the scissors to fit on the 84 frame. Enjoyed having a back up pen on the champ so I made a spot on the scale to hold it. I want to make brass or alox scales next but will first carry it awhile and make sure it's what I want.

Wow Blantz, I love it! Looks very compact and useful. I have done a few can openers with inner blades like that and find them very useful. They cut down file is impressive as well.
