NICE !

Quick questions: Dragonfly blade without modification? Could you explain your process?

I love it!

Awlso, why the combo tool instead of the bottle opener?

 ??? ???

Sure.  I noted that I saw a 91mm Spydernox being built, don’t remover where, and they made no modification to the blade at all.  They did how ever modify the spring to accommodate the Dragonfly.  I prefer the the Combo Tool.  Hindsight sight saws I should used a small blade vs. the can opener.

can you explain the process of puting the dragonfly blade?

Modifying the spring OK but for the pivot diameter?

Sure for the pivot, I peened in a piece of brass in the Spyderco blade pivot and then drilled a 2.2mm hole for the pivot.

Millions of SAKs and swiss army like knives get sold cheap on eBay and secondary markets due to broken scissor springs or scales. I put a Victorinox spring on this Syracuse #381 made in Poland sometime in the early 60’s.  If you choose to do this it only takes about 30 minutes of dremel work to have an “improved” SAK with fully functional scissors.  Also added a better nail nick. They did not know a lot about leverage in 60’s apparently.

New custom painted scales.  I could not fine 84MM Plus scale let along 84MM Plus scales in the right shade of blue.  So I made some.

Looks cool. What kind of paint and what kind of surface prep did you use?

Just standard spray paint with a matte polyurethane clear coat.  Surface preparation was simple sanding and washing.

Was very unlikely to find one of these so modded a divot tool to make this Spartan golfer out of a sheet of 1.5mm 403 stainless. Looks pretty convincing not sure how bend resistant 403 is/will be but unless I hit a large stone I’m sure it’ll be fine.
Meant to take photos of fitting up but forgot in a flurry of activity but you can see the template I made by scaling one of the photos on SAK wiki and tracing around with Adobe illustrator pen tool. For the pivot end I just traced around a pen blade….

Looks good! Keep us posted on the durability of the 403.

Here is a 3 layer I put together last night. I call it the camp and climb. Basically a climber with a blade swap.  Added an extra liner for the woodsaw/small blade - now it fits like a charm.

Last mod of 2022, always bugged me how Wenger was in some ways much more innovative than Victorinox. One particular model took me forever to find. The Wenger Double Blade SAK. Finally found one  on eBay, but was disappointed in the tool set so I finally made a Victorinox 84 mm Double Blade.

Very cool. Looks like a very useful and pocketable knife. The scales are amazing

That's great! I was unaware of the Wenger Double Blade until you mentioned it. It looks like it's four layers, but your three-layer setup is even better.

My first attempt at an 84mm build using 91mm scissors - the Golfer. Had some very old European stag horn that's was earmarked for the bin during a clean-out. Dates from around the 1930's shot by my grandfather somewhere in Austria. Glad I could repurpose them. I took some photos so will look at doing a separate thread on the build process.

Some lovely mods there - the antler and polished steel both look amazing even though they are about as different as they could be! I’ve just finished a cadet X done the ‘easy’ way with Delemont scissors - like it but have also got a 84mm huntsman small underway which I am attempting with modded 91mm scissors and spring. Not seen that model done on here (although that’s not to say it hasn’t been!) and I think it’ll be a little cracker if it turns out ok. Have had to make some of the liners from brass so a more difficult mod all round than this one…hopefully not to much so for my limited skill set and tool set!!!

Beautiful work Samek, excellent looking peening.

YAlso very nice HB, and great color too. I have a set of these scissors and a spare recruit spring kicking around. I have just been wresting with making a salesman, sportsman x, cadet x, or golfer with a phillips. Too many options so I might just buy more wenger scissors.

All of those would be worthy very usage…only problem I’d have would be pulling apart the recruit (one of my favourites) in the first place…but I’ve said that about multiple compacts previously too!!

Just a test, 84mm Walker with saddle leather scale with burnished sides. The colour and warmth of leather makes this very tactile.

The test piece was made by a leather worker in the UK, just from a photograph, no liner or plastic scale to use as a pattern. Pretty good fit. Leather is same thickness as Victorinox scale.

Hey guys,

I though I would just show my very first 2 SAK mods.
I wanted 2 knives:
1) A thin one that could be used for urban EDC and that would be the most versatile for the basic stuff I do
2) Another a bit thicker (but still carryable) that would have the basic stuff I need everyday at home but also for basic outdoor stuff like being in the woods, picnics, etc…

So for the first one I opted for the Junior Mechanic
It has a main blade, the combo tool that acts as a flat head screw driver, the Philips screw driver, and then the pliers that are useful to pick up small items my hands can’t reach.
It also has Swiss Bianco titanium plus scales with pen, toothpick, tweezers and pin.
I anodized them blue with satin on the flats.

For the 2nd one, I started from the Explorer that has the nice inline Philips screw driver.
Replaced the main blade with the serrated one from the serrated Spartan
Replaced the hook with the one with the diamond file from the Compact.
Added a saw.
Added the TortoiseGear FireAnt kit
It has Titanium scales from Aliexpress with toothpick and tweezers.
I stonewashed the scales, anodized them bronze with satin on the flats.

All in all, I took my time, did everything slowly but surely and everything turned out great and I am very happy with both.

Started from
Compact
Serrated Spartan
Explorer
Deluxe Tinker
Hiker

Ended up with
Custom Mechanic Jr
Custom Explorer

And then
Spartan
Climber
Super Tinker
That I can use as gifts

All the parts have been used, nothing was wasted ;)

Fun fact: other than the toothpick and tweezers, there is not a single duplicate tool between both Customs ;)
