Entering into the realm of Gerber
on: June 16, 2008, 10:44:06 PM
Well, I've been looking at Gerbers for a while, and with the prodding of my friends, I've decided the time has come to purchase my first Gerber. I've narrowed my choices down to the MP600 needlenose w/ carbide cutters, and the Diesel. I would have already purchased the Diesel, but I have heard not so kind things about the philips head on it, and being a person who uses the philips bit a lot, it has to work. My other decision is between a 600 with carbides and without. I really like the idea of replaceable cutters, but how well do they hold up?

I found the carbide cutters on my Gerber didn't cut or strip wire, and yes, I had them cranked down nice and tight, they weren't loose.  I'm sure they could snap piano wire like it was a wet noodle, but I strip and cut "regular" wire lots while I cut heavy gauge stuff not so much.

I'd go with the 600, really solid tool.  Never handled a Diesel though.

So regular cutters on the 600 then. How about some brutally honest opinions of the philips on the Diesel.

Like all Gerber's, the screwdrivers are still pretty short :-\, if you really need a long reach then a Core or Swisstool/Spirit might well be better for you :)

Good timing, I have exactly the same dilemna at the moment. May I add a question to people on the now? I like the look of black version of either MP600 and Diesel., but how the black coating is holding through time? Is it going to scartch as soon as it touch anything harder than marshmallow?

I can't comment on that as my tool's were stainless, however the BO coating's aren't that hard wearing on any of the major manufacturers tool's :-\

I have 3 BO Gerbers and while the coating isn't amazingly hard wearing it does take a fair bit of effort to remove it, and little scratches add character in my opinion :)

Agree about adding character, that's called "la patine" in French!
So is it worth spending the extra $ or £?
