Powerfist Freestyle?
on: June 12, 2014, 07:57:10 PM
I picked this one up a couple of weeks ago at Princess Auto for a whopping $4.99.  It looks like a cheap copy of a Freestyle.

What's that I hear?  You are saying "But Def, that looks more like a Skeletool or Style since it has a carabiner!  The Freestyle doesn't have a carabiner or screwdriver!"  And you'd be right to say that.

Mostly.

The production Freestyle has no screwdriver or carabiner, but the original pre-production version had both, as these pics from SHOT 2008 will reveal:

This particular copy has a solid mount screwdriver like the pre-production Freestyle, although the screwdriver in this case is a Phillips and not a bizarre modified flathead that should also fit some/most Phillips screws like the one Leatherman put on the Freestyle.

The info card in the clam pack also makes some interesting claims:

Saw?  I need to see this!  See saw:

Really?  The front of the bottle opener has a few chunks taken out of it and they classify that as a saw?  Wow.

The blade is at least stylish and not the usual generic blade X that you find on these kinds of things.  It seems reasonably sharp out of the pack, but I imaging that would change quickly if it had to cut its way out of the packaging.

And, this monstrosity also comes with a "sheath" although I am tempted to take the "H" away and just refer to it as a piece of sheat.

The good news is that this thing actually does have a fairly good amount of snap right out of the package.  We'll see if that lasts any time mind you, but it actually feels like it might be almost useful.  For a few minutes.  For light tasks.  Maybe.

Overall I guess it was worth $5, but then that might just be because I don't drink coffee and there wasn't a Starbucks nearby.  If there was and I did I think my $5 would have ended up somewhere a lot more useful.

It should give you decades of good service, and the good people at Power Fist know how to make a sheath that will last a lifetime.  The exposed plier spring is quite innovative, and no doubt will be copied by Leatherman some day.  Enjoy!

Found it...meet the Rolson from the UK. This came as a set. No sheath. From the looks of yours...that might not be such a bad thing. :D

The saw looks more like a serrated steak knife with a can opener.

AKA the True Utility Clip Tool in Kampfers thread too.

What is so difficult about making a better formed cross head driver in the cheap tools!
