Shouldn't it stay underground for a few extra days, to compensate for the fact that it was dug out early?

It did come out 72 hours early, but I'm okay with that.  It needed a bath before the big reveal.

Praise the Lord . . . I found the MP600 today.  It was in a pile of dirt I had removed from the burial site.  I found it after moving the dirt pile and sifting through it for the 3rd time.  For one magical moment, my eyes caught its slow, glorious arc through the air from my shovel, and I heard the the chorus of a great multitude of angels singing in unison.

Stay tuned for the one-year anniversary on Saturday.

Told you I didn't sneak in and steal it.   :twak: Or maybe I did and just put it back yesterday.

It was one year today that we began our journey into insanity.  And now the inglorious results.

The burial site:

I marked the exact burial spot with a memorial brick.  The MP600 was buried about 24" down.  When I dug it up a year later, I unintentionally shoveled the MP600 onto a large dirt pile and couldn't find it for a couple of days.  This resulted in much gnashing of teeth.  Prayer and supplication resulted in a favorable resolution.

The MP600:

Roots grew through the nylon sheath.

The MP600 was covered in mud and moisture.  There was a combination of dirt and light rust staining.  Note the condition of the plier pivot.

The rust - which was more surface staining than deep corrosion - was lighter than I expected, and all tools opened smoothly prior to cleaning.  I attribute this in large part to the MT's loose tolerances.

I hosed off the MP600, and soaked it in Dawn + water for 30 minutes. I then sprayed it thoroughly with Ballistol (http://www.ballistol.com/) and let it soak overnight.  After that, most of the surface staining rubbed off with a cloth.  The results:

The staining remained, but there was no loss of material or function.

The tools were surprisingly free of corrosion, though there was moderate staining around the pivots and on the plier pivot and teeth.

After cleaning.  I suspect that it would clean up further with the application of Nevr Dull [http://www.nevrdull.com/].

After.

Requiem:  I didn't know what to expect when we began this little adventure.  I suspected the the MP600 would be completely rusted and unusable after a year underground, and was happy to see that it remained functional even before cleaning.  In the last year, the temperature has ranged from below zero to almost 100 degrees F, and we have had heavy rains and lots of snow.  Perhaps the MP600 was protected in its subterranean lair.  Rusting was minimal, and it cleaned up well. Only staining remained, which had no effect on function.  The MP600 has a few character marks now, but remains a valued member of the Powernoodle Arsenal.

Excellent!  :tu:  I'm glad to see it did just fine, with no impairment to utility. This might settle a question or two as to the material quality of Gerbers...............

I think it'll come out in as good as condition as it went in. That is, once you shake the dirt out of it.
