Newbie scores a used Wave to refurb
on:
November 18, 2014, 09:00:50 AM
So I recently purchased this used new version Wave for pretty cheap locally. The only thing I'd repair on it is the scissors, which seem to maybe have broken at the handle. I've lurked a bit before joining this forum and have noticed people often replacing the scissors for victorinox version of scissors. Is that an easy mod to do? And would I have to buy an entire SAK just to extract the scissors?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
For the record, I've been a daily carrier of the Wingman and hadn't used any other leatherman or SAK/SoG before getting this Wave.

Welcome to MTO mike, you should post in the new member forum!
As for the Wave, I personally would send it to Leatherman for repairs, they will more than likely send you a brand new one possibly with a sheath.
Enjoy your time here and hide your wallet.

Welcome Good Mood Mike!
Yes, 91mm Vic scissors will fit, but only on the top pivot, instead one of the OHO tools. Many ended up replacing a Wave file with the Vic or Wingman scissors.
Unfortunately, there is a reason those stock Wave scissors are diminutive. If they were any bigger a pliers head would hit them and jam on folding, or wouldn't fold at all.
If you're toying with an idea of replacing your broken Wave scissors at the bottom of the handle with Vic's, you can pretty much forget about it. While it's true that Vic's scissors come in different sizes and lengths but most of them are either too wide, thick or long to fin int the Wave.
Hope this helps a little, cheers!
EDC and OCD. A wicked mix.

Hi! I am back. Allow me to put on my enabler's hat:
Leatherman has so many excellent offerings, you must purchase each every single one to experience them, but you canforget the juice series.

Thanks all, I think I'll see how much I end up needing scissors in my daily, I just as easily used the knife of my wingman more. I forgot about the warranty, I won't need a sheath cause I use kydex holsters but I'll see what they say about a repair or replacement.

Welcome to the club mate! If you like the wave but want a larger version, check out its beefy brother the surge! And yeah, I would just send it to Leatherman warranty, takes about one week total.
