Photo comparison: Crucial & Skeletool
on: December 06, 2014, 12:38:33 AM
Size & pocket clip comparison.
There are (thin) liner locks for ALL tools on Crucial.

Pocket clips
Crucial rides deeper than Skeletool, but might not as deep as you think, Wave series has the true deep carry clips

Knife comparison
Crucial's knife has blunt tip so it is sheepeople friendly.

You can also see the thickness of both tools here.

Pliers
Skeletool won in the pliers strength department, that is rare.

Drivers
Crucial has one + and - driver while Skeletool has two sizes of each type. (Many more if you have bit kit)
So you better hope they are the size you need, that is all you will ever have on Crucial.

It's fairly well known that I'm not a fan of the Skeletool, but the Crucial seems to try really hard to make the Skele look more appealing ....  It's not quite as bad on pliers ergos and rides deeper in the pocket, but the limited driver length and additional of a strap cutter when there's a perfectly servicable sheepsfoot blade doesn't enthral me at all. The pliers don't overwhelm either.

I have the Ltd Ed corkscrew version, but have never carried it. The Crucial was not one of Gerber's better offerings IMHO

Excellent photo comparison, Kampfer. Thank you.

I don't think either tool is to my taste, though.

Don't get fool by the look of those Gerber pocket clips, they are not deep carry clips. Pant pocket can NOT pass screw under the clip.

I'll check that out on mine  :tu: Thanks Kampfer  :salute:

It's not quite as bad on pliers ergos

Photo 1:
Handles are comfortable to grip, but the pliers head is slightly pointing back toward my wrist, feels very odd.

Photo 2:
NO GO! While pliers head pointing forward, the corner in handle (in red circle) is telling me to drop it.

 :tu:

The Wingman/Sidekick have a similar "right way and wrong way" too, but I couldn't find any way of comfortably holding the Skele pliers  :-\ I think one of the main problems of these stylised handles is the fact that it doesn't take into account variation in peoples hands. It may be ultra comfortable for the designer, and even for many potential users, but for others it just won't sit right. Kind of limits the catchment of potential fans/users far more than the straight handled option that so many other tools offer

Sorry mate, but mine sit's right down fully at the base of the clip, disappearing fully in the pocket.

HOWEVER .... the corkscrew version I have, has it's own complications. The bottle opener part almost sits as high off the body of the tool as the clip does, so when you put the tool to your pocket, the bottle opener gets hooked up on the outside of the pocket unless you pay very specific attention to that not happening
