cbl51 - You're right, leaving the house with the stick is second nature.  Even for a short walk to the corner store, it comes with me.  It's become second nature, and people are already accepting it as just a part of me, nothing that requires comment.

And it only gets better with time. A stick can be used to reach out and pull stuff towards you using the handle to 'grab' with, or while walking in the woods, you can push stick/thorn bushes aside while you pass. Can fen off stray dogs or any hostile creature with ease, or overly aggressive bums/pan handlers. Crossing a creek, you can use the third leg to help balance on the stepping stone, or log. With a longer hiking stick in the woods, you can use as a brace for binoculars while watching some critter. Or a regular size walking stick, you can use while in a kneeling position to steady your pistol hand for a better shot out at 50 yards or longer.

Of course the the old Maasai proverb that Teddy Roosevelt misquoted: While traveling in the bush, speak softly and carry a big stick and you will go far.

After a while, my stick became like an extension of my hand, and it felt abnormal if it were not there. I keep a selection in the rack by the front door, and make a daily selection of what stick to carry depending on what I am doing that day, and where.

Look at what I found at my pharmacist while waiting for them to fill out a prescription of 600 mg Ibuprofen for a severe pain in the neck. This is the Multi-Functional Walking Stick distributed by Airway Surgical Appliances Ltd.

The cane is one of those bungee corded fold up jobs.

Looks like a regular cane...

But the other side has a crank charger recessed into the handle.

Which powers up an internal rechargeable battery.

This is used to power a cane lamp that faces forward. Press once to power the 2 downward facing LEDs to illuminate your pathway and also to let people know your on the side of the street in the dark. Press the button located just above the LED lamp to go into blinking mode.

This also powers a red rear tail light that will also blink in blinking mode along with the front lamp. Likewise, there is a button located bellow the rear tail light that enables the vibration mode. Yes, you can have the cane massage your hand while using it. This is all powered via the built in crank charger...no additional batteries are needed.

Now to make this perfect, maybe a small built in tool chest or something. :D

What they come up with these days.  :salute:

I've been seeing something like it for a couple of years, sold by street merchants. I guess I could buy one and post comparison pics for giggles if the price isn't far fetched.

We're talking about a -seemingly- aluminium tube with holes on the side so as to adjust height and what I'd think is an actual, cheap flashlight stuffed into the hollow plastic handle. Chako's is much more elaborate, has a crank charger too.

Not at all a bad idea, provided that the construction quality is good.

Looks sturdy enough, and it did hold my weight as I walked around the room using it to see if the thing would fall apart.  :D

It's got a set of holes on the handle, I wonder why that is. An air vent maybe?
