Canada Series 1
on: August 16, 2014, 12:51:45 AM
Here's a  set of knives for the Victorinox Series heading in the SAKwiki. Need the name of the Canadian wholesaler who offered these. Also a time frame if available.

There's another Canadian series with wildlife and the Canadian maple leaf. We need photos of those knives, particularly the 91mm versions.

--------------------------------------

This set of Victorinox knives was offered by Canadian wholesaler (need name) and featured three knives, each with a fancy inlay on the handle.

Scouter - a discount version of the Recruit without toothpick, tweezers, or key ring - D-5140/5141

Hiker - a discount version of the Spartan without toothpick or tweezers - D-5150/5151

Alpineer - a special version of the Passenger - D-5160/5161

(The first number is for the plain knife; the second for the knife in a display pack with leather sheath)

OK, I thought these were from a sales ad I saw and were being sold as economy models.

Any chance of getting this added to the wiki? Its a lot clearer than the version I have.

We finally got to close this one with help from Coloswiss. The dealers name was SMICO.

SMICO also did the series of 12 Vics with Canadian wildlife. I have  7 or 8 of them. Anyone have a complete set?

There's a page on them somewhere in the wiki. At a minimum there should be a listing under 'Series' as Canada Series 2 or Canada Wildlife Series and linked to the ad sheet.

Canada Wildlife Series

At one time Canadian wholesaler SMICO offered a series of twelve knives featuring Canadian wildlife. Six of the knives were 91mm models with red plastic handles (all?) featuring one of six animals and the Canadian maple leaf. The other six knives were a variety of smaller knives with different colored metal handles, and the same animals and maple leaf as on the larger knives.

Karl, do you know if the ALOX ones were all available in red, black or blue or were the colors you show here the only ones available for the certain model/animal?

As far as I know, the metal ones shown were the only ones available.

I think all the 91mms were red, but I haven't seen all of them.

Well the ad sheet says red cell. scales so I think it's safe to assume those were all red. But there's no mention of the color of ALOX scales.

I'll wait a few days to see if anyone has the complete set or maybe the missing ones and will make a page then.

Just saw that about the red scales in the ad. The eyes are going along with everything else.

Sounds like a plan. Would figure some of the Canadian members would have some.

There is also another Canadian series (Canada Love) that came out earlier this year; Spartans and Classics. SwissBianco Canada had some of them, but they don't appear to have shown up in general release.

Karl, do you have any more precise info on when these first showed up, other than "At one time", even a decade would do.

I started collecting SAKs around 2000, and they were a collector's item even then, though part of that may be to their only being sold in Canada.

Come on Chako, Def, et al. Some of you Canucks should have some info on these!

There's a 1980 SMICO catalog in the wiki, which at least gives an idea of when they were in business. Doesn't include the Canada Wildlife series.

Current searches turn up a home furnishing company, and an aggregate materials handling company.

Wish I could help more, but I started collecting in 2009. At that time, I didn't see any of these for sale to buy any. This is the first I have seen or heard of this series.
A little Leatherman information.

Maybe we could narrow it down by when the Passenger and Modeler were available? Jazzbass?

Anyways, page created.
