Coleman MAXX Cree
on: June 26, 2008, 05:04:56 AM
Cree LEDs are showing up everywhere nowadays. Walmart has a Coleman MAXX flashlight on sale for $25. 125 emitter lumens, 6 hours of runtime, textured reflector. Not a bad light at all. The one I picked up as a really nice beam and a nice warm tint. Runs on three AAAs and as a aluminum body with a forward clicky. Maybe a little to big to EDC but a decent light for the $.

Here is the beamshot. For some reason the beam shows up on the camera as having a very green tint. But in real life to me anyway it's white leaning towards the yellow. Has a nice sidespill with a tight hotspot.

A lot of these new lights are pretty decent, if only they didn't run on 3xAAA.

Yeah, but for only 25 bucks this light looks decent.

Probably direct drive, with all of that design's inherent disadvantages.

However, direct drive is also a very simple design with little to go wrong.  Direct drive lights can offer decent performance with NiMH cells.

Yes, typically 3 cell lights are direct drive.

You guys you now have your battery choice with the Coleman MAXX Cree lights. Walmart has the 3xAAA , 2xAA and something I haven't seen 2xCR2. Makes for a small package. Advertised as having 2 hours of runtime.

Thanks for the update, prime77.

All three of these Coleman lights look like great bang-for-the-buck.

So many relatively inexpensive - but still really cool - LED lights are coming out nowadays that it'd be nearly a full time job just to keep up with them all.  Decent quality lights at lower prices hold more interest for me than the top quality lights at high prices.

Ain't it amazing what can be found at WalMart these days for 25 bucks?
