this is a bottle opener i got for my bday

made from an old shimano bike chain , not sure what the blue bit is though

(Image removed from quote.)

:D

The blue bit appears to be a section cut from a crank sprocket (chainring).

thinking of upgrading the brakes on my bike to hydraulic, any real benefits?

my pads needs changing and i buggered up a screw on the rear brake and finding a replacement is virtually impossible

so will i notice much difference other then a whole in my pocket?

I had a set of Hayes hydraulics on my old voodoo. A little heavier but you WILL stop on a dime. Brake pad wear is minimum and it takes very little break in.

I hear Magura are good too.

V brakes are still the most cost effective -weight saving way to go

i used a set of HS33's magura's rim brakes on my old kilauea for 8 years with no maintanence other than pads changed every year, they are the best brakes ive ever had, i wont to upgrade my disc brakes this year although TBH they work pretty well so will wait for them to wear out ,

i have a real passion for road bikes due to racing them for years , but i dod cyclo cross for about 3 years in the winters and got to liking using a cyclo cross bike for off road instead of my mountain bike, the urban boardman looks good ryan, for £650 you will get a good bike mate, look at specialized as well as they have some good deals on the evans site, my brother got one and did lands end to john o groats with no issues, i chose it for him and it was reduced from £600 to £400, check out there site,  :tu:

ive been talking to the man in my local bike shop he reckons he can get me a full carbon racer or a carbon and alloy racer with better spec parts for under £700 as the new stocks coming in and they sell the old stuff off cheap

getting some to look at monday but it will most likely either be a forme or a moda

both look good and are bikes from uk firms  :tu:

sounds good ryan, what uk firms ? ive had a few carbon frames in the past and raced on a couple but i always went back to ali and steel, ack in the early 90's i saw a few carbon frames snap and i broke a vitus so put me off , but these days they have perfected them, look forward to pics mate  :tu:

Other than being easier to maintain, not really :-\

I'd steer clear of carbon fibre too, and go for a decent 520-521 steel frame if possible :tu:

Dawes do a bloody good range of bikes, that'll last you a lifetime, as would Kona

Fragility mainly :-\

A mate of mine had a Chris Boardman Hybrid, and he cracked the forks when he got cut up by a car (there's a shocker!) and had to take to the kerb :-\

Steel offers the comfort of CF :) Yes it's heavier, but it can take a pounding that would snap carbon fibre like a twig, and stress even aluminium :)

yeah im with mike on this one, ive broken CF frames before and seen mant broke, its ok for the pro's as they change there bikes regualry and its ok for a summer bike with now and then racing but for a everyday ride i would go for steel or ali every time, more servicable plus a good steel frame you will have for life  ;) anything made by columbus or reynolds is very good,

fixed gears are great ryan as basic set up means less problems, but there only good if your very fit and take time to get use to, i rode fixed back in the early 90's and loved them, i rode on the track and had one with mudguards on and a front brake as a winter hack, but i built one up a couple of years back and found my fitness level and skill not the same as it was so i sold it, my ali road bike i ride off road now and then as has 36 spoke wheels and 700'25c tires its good fun now and then and takes the abuse, im going to get a steel or Ti cyclo cross biek in the next 2 years as prefer this set up as good alrounder,  :tu:

Why a road bike?

There fine when your in the mood to do some speedy riding, but a bit limited for anything else :-\

A hybrid or cyclocross bicycle would serve you better imo :)

cyclocross bikes look like a racer but have better brakes and lower gearing, plus tires for both on road and off, i ride a audax bike that looks like a racer but has lower gears and mudguards plus option to fit a rack, just another idea  :D
