Badge request: Outdoor Cooking
on: June 05, 2024, 02:09:56 PM
Full disclosure: this dish was cooked indoors. In my defense, my fire-starting skills are abysmally lacking (I need to fix that), and air quality in my area has in recent memory been so bad that outdoor cooking was discouraged. This recipe could probably be adapted for campfire cooking easily enough, and at least one mod is okay with me cooking indoors.

Farmer X's lemon pepper pork chops

This is my kind of recipe: a few ingredients and minimal prep yield amazing results. It is of my own creation. Considering that I only recently struggled with "empty packet into bowl, add hot water, and stir," I think it's a monumental achievement.

Of course, no two ovens are exactly alike, so some adjustment to time and/or temperature may be needed. And be sure to practice safe food handling. :tu:

Serves a married couple, or a bachelor for two nights.

Ingredients

-2 pork chops
-1 TBSP butter, melted
-Lemon pepper
-Salt (optional if your lemon pepper does not contain it)

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. (Edit: that's about 205 degrees Celsius.) Use the Roast function if your oven has it.
2. Place pork chops in cast-iron pan.
3. Microwave butter for 30 seconds or until completely melted. If you prefer a different method for melting butter, then by all means use it.
4. Brush each pork chop with butter.

5. Add salt, if desired. (My lemon pepper contains salt, so I skip this step.)
6. Lightly, evenly, and completely cover the top of each pork chop with lemon pepper. This will give them a nice crust.

7. Roast for 20 minutes.
8. Serve with potatoes, rice, or even steamed veggies if that's your thing.

Yummers.  Outdoor cooking doesn't always mean piling up some firewood.  Gas grills, camp stoves, a can of sterno.  None of these make a smoke screen.  I just take a propane camp stove.  If it is inconvenient to carry, then I just pack something that doesn't need cooking.
I never eat fast food anymore.  So it is either cook something or make a sandwich.  Those chops look better than my planned leftover pinto beans.  Best wishes.  G

The deal was doing the prep outdoors. I am not seeing any outdoors photos. ??

Your kind words more than make up for me not getting a badge! :hatsoff:

Yes, it was.

Zoidberg and I talked about this via PM before I requested the badge. Of course, I forgot to re-read the PM. So I'll have to try for the badge again later. Maybe there will be a day that's decent enough to fire up the charcoal grill, or maybe I'll get a camp stove like Gary mentioned.

You could eat the second chop outside tomorrow and take a pic of the chop and surrounding area, I would count that.

I'll do that if the rain stays away. :tu:

Well, it wasn't the rain that I had to worry about...it was the wind! But hopefully the photos will show clearly enough that I did indeed eat the second pork chop outside. On my front porch, yes...but I was still outside!

And here's the last bite of pork chop. I put it next to a lingonberry (I think) bust for the photo. Those little smurfs sure do a damn fine job of getting all over the ground beside the garage.

Pork chops look good.  Eating outdoors always makes food taste better in my opinion.

Thanks! :hatsoff: And I think you may be right about eating outdoors making food taste better. I'll have to do that more often.
