New Desk
on: January 02, 2007, 02:40:13 AM
I almost escaped the holiday season without having to do any major assembly projects. Then at the last possible moment, Mrs. Claus decided our middle elf needed a new desk in her bedroom for homework. Darn! I put off assembling it as long as I could, then finally caved in to the pressure today.

Luckily, my brand new SwissTool RS arrived two days ago, and was able to help out considerably!

The belt cutter blade also does a fine job on cardboard and shipping tape.

OUCH!! Trying to use a razor sharp knife in one hand while taking pictures in the other hand is a sure way to bleed! How embarrassing...... :-[

After a bit of first-aid, the box is open at last!

Hmmmm, the instructions are all in Spanish? (No hablo español señor.) Luckily there are plenty of pictures.

Eeek! Look at all those parts!  :o

Installing pull-studs into the desktop section.........

Things are starting to take shape...

Plenty of chores for the SwissTool screwdriver blades, but not much for the pliers to do.

The desk drawer slides are last. Almost finished!

Yet another satisfied customer!!

Which tool did you use to open the box of band aids?

Be honest now , how many times did your daughter say when you were taking pics of the Swisstool '' Dad thats sooo sad ''  :)  Great post . Was there anything that the Swisstool couldnt do and you had to get another tool to do it ?

I can't speak for Bob, but I've assembled a few similar things (bookshelves, TV stands etc) and about the only thing I ever found myself needing besides a decent multi or SAK was a staple gun.  Many of them come with cardboard backs and some small nails to hold the cardboard on so one is supposed to need a hammer instead.  I find the staple gun is a much faster and more effective method.

Yes, that's about it; the only other tool I used was a hammer. No matter how pure my intentions may have been to complete the whole project using only a multitool, I just could not bring myself to pound in nails with a new SwissTool.
 :D

......and yes Dunc, I did get a lot of strange and pitiful looks from the wife and daughter!

What great pics, they are probably more useful than the Spanish instructions. LOL :)

Huh, no need for the pliers?

I don't know about the rest of you but I find the pliers the most underused of the tools on my multitool.

However what I will say is that when I need them, I really need them to get me out of some fix. They are usually more emergency than the emergency blades.

J-sews,

Great thread.  It looks like that Swisstool did a great job...with your help of course.  The rescue type blade did a nice number on the cardboard.

Have to love those SwissTools!  My Original is far from new, and it has assembled and dissassembled many things over the years.

Great post Bob.  Marvelous pictures.

The SwissTool is one of my all time favorites.  I doubt there are many things in the world that you can't assemble or re-assemble with one!

Yeah, and it did a nice number on my thumb too!

(Although I blame that incident entirely on operator error........)   :P

Defective multitool design?  How dare they put sharp edges on the knives?

I think Victorinox needs to make a "My First Swisstool" for Bob...  :)

I need some legal advice here;

Should I sue Vic for not clearly labeling the knife blade "SHARP"........or should I sue my parents for making me so clumsy?   ???

I think you sue them both.  I'd also sue Staples for making a desk and putting it in a container that requires a sharp object to open.  They obviously don't care about the safety of the people opening the box.

I think that's Gross Negligence... (did I spell that right?)

I am going to have this engraved on every blade in my house:

WARNING: Not to be taken internally.  Insertion of this device into any anatomical region could result in serious bodily harm or death.  The surgeon general advises that use of this product increases your risk of fingerlessness and the sudden appearance of your blood on the outside of your skin.  Use as directed, and only under the supervision of a qualified individual.

Interesting how the Swiss Army Mouse seems to be made with Leatherman implements...

J-sews,

It's your fault...after reading your thread and looking at the pictures a couple times I sent FelineVet a note today ordering a Swisstool RS.

I'm going to try not to cut my thumb, however.

Next I've got to get a Charge...I've never owned a Leatherman and want to try one someday.

For now I'm looking forward to the RS.

Congrats plowboy, you'll like it a lot. All of the Victorinox models are the pinnacle of manufacturing excellence. Some people may prefer the blade layout of a Leatherman or the pliers of a SOG, but nobody disputes the quality of a SwissTool.
