SEAL's for SAK's?
on: November 06, 2014, 06:12:04 PM
I was browsing the 'net, and I ran across this little blurb on a business website. Don't know if it's true or not.

"GENEVA, Switzerland – The US Federal Business Opportunities department is looking for a few good Swiss army knives for the US Navy’s  Sea, Air, Land Teams  survival kits.

The SEALs are assembling the ultimate survival kits that will include the iconic Swiss multi-tool knife, and other James Bond-like items including Sun button compasses, survival matches, Photon Micro-Light II flashlights, waterproof paper and good old bouillon.

Check the POCKET PRO SURVIVAL KIT – Federal Business Opportunities: Opportunities for more info. "

It would make sense for a survival kit for people who have to be very very mobile. I guess the SEAL's are not interested in Rambo knives! But then, Rambo was an army guy. :D

Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

At one time the standard SEAL knife was the SOG SEAL. Don't know what they're currently using.

That kit SAKGuy linked is one of the best I have seen.

Plus it has a SAK in it.

Yeah, but it looks like a 58mm! Not what I'd think of for survival outside of an urban area. Maybe the SEAL's are practicing for survival in New York city! :D

I thought it was to complement their ever present sheath knife.

Well the RAF uses the Outrider SAK in its Survival kit.  And since their Outrider has a NATO requisition on it.  Perhaps the SEALs are considering making a survival kit that's NATO compatable?

Wasn't RAF using the Hunter model and German Kampfschwimmer the Rucksack model?

I don't know, what kind of gas milage does that thing get??

A bit of searching and some math, and the answer is .75 miles per gallon for the F. Mk. 6 in the picture.  :D

Capacity - 592 gallons with wing tanks. http://www.rafjever.org/hunter6pic013.htm#fuel

Range - 444 miles. http://www.flugzeuginfo.net/acdata_php/acdata_hunter_en.php

Man, I can't imagine what it would cost to pull that thing up to a pump and 'fill 'er up! But it would be cool ride!!

It's about what my 1982 Caprice got.  The Hunter and the Caprice have another thing in common, flying.  I got that Chevy completely off the ground, all four wheels up once......  :ahhh

We are on a challenge to hit a new post record, so I think I can safely derail this thread....

I once bid on a Russian Helicopter Jet turbine - Mounted on a test stand with complete instruments and gear to get it running.
I had wild dreams of standing beside it with ear protection on, revving it and grinning madly.
Thanks god I was outbid... I had sold a bike shortly before so I bid 1500,-. End price was 3400,-

And, topic related, I want to say that a 58 mm Vic seems to be a nice addition to a Survival Kit, especially when you most likely have a fixed blade anyways. Pretty much bang for the buck / tool per gram.

Edit: The SAK pictured is a 65 mm Wenger, isn´t it?

NOTE!  I was introduced to the OH by a friend who was in USAF-SOC.He, and his whole wing(stationed in Okinawa) carried the OHT on their persons :salute:

That's very interesting BT.  Can your friend provide the story on how that came about?

If I remenber correctly, not much drama to the story(no "killer commando" story).  The practical reason was the serrated edge of the the nylon webbing and drag line(s) to the parachutes in the event of emergencies
And since that wing's job is to insert SO personnel behind enemy lines.  The OHT-SAK is a practical tool

Thanks, BT.

It sounded like his unit might have gotten a group purchase and maybe had a special unit logo on the scales or something.  I don't know whether Vic does that or not but it seems like I've read there are a number of different countries that  issue that knife to their military units and get different scales.  Thought it might be something unique.

No.  No unit/wing markings.  It was just an off the shelf,"plain Jane", that you would buy from Felinevet, or any knife shop on the planet :tu:
