How to remove the bail?
« on: November 20, 2014, 11:37:57 PM »
I have an 84mm with bail that has damage tools and would like to try and repair it.  How do you remove the bail? Do you drill it out or can you just flick the bail out with a flat screwdriver?

thanks

Is it like the bail on a Wenger SI? They flick out with a flat screwdriver.

Do you mean the bail where the rivet goes all the way through?

answer is CAREFULLY!

Try filing a flat on the end with a fine tooth file then centre punch (lightly) to make sure the drill doesn't wander. Drill well undersize and using a dental burr cut around the inside of the hole so the whole end of the rivet comes off. No danger of marking up the bail.

Alternative method if you plan to replace scales would be cut the rivet down between the scale and outer liner with a razor saw.

Will Victorinox work on a 50-year old knife?  The bail was discontinued in 1968.
Drill out the ends of the pins as PTRSAK says.  Only the very ends, then pull off the bail, then carefully peen the pin-ends flat.  You probably won't have enough brass there to file the ends before peening.

Don't abuse the privilege, but in a bit word yes.

Ibach is where the special cases should.go, and make sure to send the requested shipping. One good turn deserves another.
