Military Issue tool (where and what?)
on: July 16, 2008, 03:45:54 AM
Don't know if there is a post like this or not, but recently the question of where certain military issue tools are from has came up.  Some of you miltary personnel or ex personnel could fill in some blanks on the issue of certain tools
Like what is given and what country of origin it is given? Thanks to anyone who can comment on this

Ok, after much extensive research I have found that there is no standard issue for Andorra, Costa Rica, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Kiribati, Liechtenstein, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, or Vatican City. Of course none of those counries have armed forces, either... :D

Singapore -- SOG Powerlock black oxide with blasting cap crimper

But I do not have one. This started just a few years back. When I was in the forces many years back, we got a horrible no brand blunt knife + can opener combo. Ironic, since they stopped issuing canned rations long ago. After that spell was some Victorinox models, and now, it's the SOG.

I believe that one of the requirements for being the Vatican's Swiss Guards, besides being Roman Catholic,is also having done an active tour in the Swiss Army.I guess that there would at least be a Soldier/SI in their pockets.

It is more than likely that neither is U.S. Navy SEAL issued. Sellers on eBay use things like that to appeal to the gullible people of the world. I've seen cheap, bright yellow and blue, Chinese "diving" knives listed as U.S. Navy SEAL issue.

That is not to say that the U.S. Navy doesn't issue Powerlocks to their men, I'm just saying that eBay isn't always honest (the sellers aren't, at least!).

If I'm not mistaken, the U.S. Navy SEALs are issued a SOG fixed blade. The "SEAL Team" I think.

Finland doesnt have any really official tool or knife unfortunately.theres just this Fiskars RK62 assault rifle bayonet that many of guys never even see in service-time,its rare to even see it in parades attached to rifles.

i have one version this rk62 bayonet:

many of the regulars and officers buy wholesale lots of the new m95  knife that is officially accepted to be carried in harness, and made for military purposes originally.
m95:

it has some variants in blade lenghts and sheaths:

and then theres these knifes and multis, mostly leathermans an vics, that different groups buy and have engraved, etched, burned or embroided with uniting logos representing their "job" in army(sorry i dont know the proper terms in english),like my sniper squad got our own leathermans, and these finnish puukkos that arent sold to any one else but only for guys who serviced at same post where i did.it has nice big cast bear with crown, holding a sword,on end of tang, which is my post´s traditional logo, and it has branded in gold,a historic drummer that represents history of my post, since the time we were under swedens power, they called the post as "royal sniper brigade of turku".
"we" have these kind of markings usually on our gear:

the one above is common to all posts, its the logo of our whole army.

above is my units logo, dates back hundreds of years.

this is very common way to make some knifes markings, this is for 1st sergeants:

i hope soma day they will issue us some multitool, since id like to have some BO with unit engravings or something.

yes some call it since the guy who designed, has a last name"peltonen".but officially they call it m95 and rk 62 and often its also called as"sissi puukko",that sissi means in english something very close to "long-range ranger",or guerilla, what ever pleases u.

i got my rk62 as soon as the civil version came out, from his shop when i visited him at about age og some 14-16,cant remember even, but i remember ha was very nice old school blacksmith and he took me to his shop where he hammered my knife almost all the way into some large oak-block and twisted and punished it and the blade kept returning to its original shape time after time.since that day ive been learning knife making too.

this is the latest of m95 versions, its one inc shorter and bit wider, the blade.that is also version with gold plated finnish lion with swords. it aint so expensive as its so good.68 euros plus s&h.

http://www.canit.se/~griffon/knives/m95/sissipuukko_m95.html

u can carry, and most of guys do carry it like this:

My brother who's in the Military said that Visiting U.S. forces in my country carry Gerber MT's. I'm not really sure if Gerber officially issued their tools to these soldiers.

Hello gene,
Its a shame that our army doesn't issue knives? or multitools. Batanggas Balisong are cheap and of good quality, does your bro knows if they issue that in some of our military men?

dont want to harass but its FiskarS RK62,the r comes from word RYNNÄKKÖ which compares to your assault, and the K from KIVÄÄRI which means rifle.its kinda odd "name" since the rifle and the knife both share the same code.

In my experience; Gerber seems to pop up more with Maintenance Men and the Military than Leatherman. The vast majority of service members I've met have referred to all multis as "Gerber" regardless of the actual brand.
