Which Surge sheath to get?
on: January 13, 2015, 03:25:09 AM
So I'm finally going to bite the bullet on a new Surge.  Been using an ST300 at work for a couple years now and love it but I've got an itch to try something new.   My question is, which is the best factory sheath to order it with?  I'd like to be able to carry the file or saw in it as well as the bit kit sleeves.   I'm leaning toward the molle or nylon.  If the "premium" leather sheath is the same as the one for the ST300 I definitely don't want it.  Almost lost my ST several times out of that sheath even when closed
  Any recommendations?

Well its gonna come with a factory sheath but it looks like there are some options as to which one.  May look into aftermarket sheaths down the road.

I use the nylon one for my Surge.  One card and some extra blade plus the MT and some smaller items in the side elastic is perfectly doable.

I use the premium leather/nylon sheath. Never has giving me any problems on any of my Surges. However, Skinith makes some sweet sheaths if you want super high quality.

I use the Molle XL sheath marketed by Leatherman. It has enough puouches/nylon straps to house two Leatherman Bitkits, two additional sawblades, the Leatherman Bit Extender and a Flashlight.

I don´t think my answer will be a big help here ... but for what it´s worth:

As i´m not one of these "Carry all i can carry" guys i edc my naked Surge with a additional Flashlight, only. That i do in a leather Wave-sheath.

When i really know i´m gonna use it while working/tinkering in or around the house, so i know i want to have the sheat with the extra blades (file and woodsaw) with me - then i use the original Surge molle sheath with the small pocket for the extra blades.

I never carry any extenders or bit cards just to be prepared, and up to now i never missed them.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

I find it a bit tight getting two bit cards and the blades pouch in, even with the Molle XL.

However, Skinith makes some sweet sheaths if you want super high quality.

This is not the first time I have seen that extra 'i' creeping into Skinth...

+1 for Skinth.  After I lost my TTi from my Leatherman sheath, I ordered a Skinth from Eric.  They're excellent, customisable at point of purchase, and really durable.

Does Eric still do custom work for his sheaths?

I thought no.

Wow thanks for all the replies.  Probably going to with the molle sheath when ordering. I'll look into something nicer when it wears out.  Been using a maxpedition single sheath for my st300 and while as a whole it has held up pretty well, the velcro doesn't grab anymore.  I sure wish these molle sheaths had snaps embedded in the velcro for some additional security.

Ah, bad choice of words on my part.  I meant that you can choose options, such as closure method, belt loop or clip, d ring for keys etc.
You're right, I don't think he does customisation anymore.

I've tried all of the Leatherman offerings and I've found that the premium leather one was the best for me. Comfortably holds the Surge, bit driver extender, 1 x bit kit and spare saw blades. Could probably fit a second bit kit in there if needed too.

The XL Molle sheath would be my second choice, but it is quite a bit bigger.

I wonder if you could add some snaps. Should be able to get them at a hobby store or online like they use on leather work.
