I don't see how this forum could work on a for-profit base... It's the passion that drives us here, and the honest thoughts and posts. All this would suffer if commerSmurfpillsm would take over.

So  :tu: and  :salute: to you, Grant!

I see how it could work for a profit- for starters there are a lot of ad slots we aren't using that we could stick ads in.  Then there are lots of words we could use for keyword advertising, where certain words you post turn into hot links for a sponsored product.

If I did all of that I could probably retire off of just what the site makes and new users would never know the difference.  We have enough traffic here that we'd just transition and the new guys that don't know any differentand the old guys with nowhere else to go would just keep plugging along.

Personally I prefer atmosphere over profit.

Yep those professional forum buyers are the worst, if it was a company in the subject business then it won't be bad. Another forum I frequent was bought by Vail corporation and as a user I didn't see any change, they left it pretty much as is.

Although there was some benefit, that the site is much more resistant to frivolous lawsuits. The forum was discussing an incident about Sunshine village's prick owner and his brat kid vs employees, and was forced to delete all related thread when his lawyer threatened to sue because the private owners simply cannot afford to defend against anything. If it was owned by Vail at the time, their corporate lawyers would've responded by telling them to piss off.

Because things are kinda weird in my life right now, I'm not able to visit as often as I like. If you'd sold out Grant, that would have been the end of two of my anchors of sanity. Thank you for giving me a place to see normal people.

That's what I meant, there might be a MTo with lots of advertising, but it won't be this bunch of lovely miscreants we are right now! So  :tu: to you, once again (but never enough!)

I'm glad you all agree with my philosophy on this place.  I also feel it's important to let you all know what is going on- I always say you are all a part of this place, and that is the members, not me that makes this forum what it is, so it would be very hypocritical for me to not tell you guys everything!

I'm not usually one to keep things from members unless I absolutely have to, so I figured it was best to let you all know this, in case you hear it through the grapevine somehow.

In the past month I have been contacted by some companies interested in purchasing Multitool.org.  As a fair and open minded guy, and especially one who was curious, I responded to see what kind of money we were talking about- after all, if the right offer came around I'd seriously consider it.  Then I'd use the money to plan an elaborate trip where I travel the world and meet all of you in person and thank you for having been a part of this place!

For a variety of reasons I have terminated discussions with all of the companies that contacted me.  As much as I'd love to meet all of you and visit your corners of the world, I just can't see any of these companies offering me anywhere near what I would need to have to sell this place.  I never even got around to discussing money with them, I just told them all "Thanks but no thanks."

Besides, I have a few too many projects in the works with now to let this place go.  Maybe in the future MTO will change hands, but for now at least we are staying right here.

I was debating bumping this thread again as I got another inquiry last week into buying the site.  I ignored it as the site is not currently for sale and this one seemed less likely to make a legitimate offer than the others were.

Anyways, as I said, we are staying right here.
