"Evo" Lock: Irritating?
on: February 15, 2015, 01:49:37 AM
With regards to the Wenger and Victorinox Evo series of locks. The ones that are a small metal tab, which protrude and say LOCK on them...

Do they irritate you? I find that when using the knife, the lock gets in the way. It pokes my palm, making me adjust the knife in my hand. When closed, it snags on nearly everything in my pocket. It rips the (Victorinox leather and nylon) sheath when extracting, and is a general nuisance. I'd file it off, but then I'd have no way of closing the main blade.

Any thoughts?
This is gonna hurt...

I love the Wenger lock.  I think it's an awesome feature.  Have to say, it's never been a snag fest or a problem for me :)

I had an eddie bauer scaled wenger traveler with the side lock.  It always snagged in my pockets.  I gifted it to my daughter who keeps it on a lanyard for outdoor activities.

She really likes it but doesent carry it in her pocket.

I found it no more annoying when whittling or carving than a corkscrew on a Vic 91mm

No probs for me either - for carry or use
Evo S16 is my most regular EDC these days
Like the W 85mm locks
Really want one on the Vic CO - it's folded on me a few times and punched a hole in my finger - when used as x sd of course

I had a traveler with a lock
It didn't big me but I never really used it.

I'd like to get a Evo 18 s one of these days.

I didn't hate it but it did feel odd.

Its a nice concept, but I find the lock uncomfortable to use. Also it regularly hangs up in the pocket. So I carry a plain unlocked version of the Traveler.

I would have preferred a liner lock like the 111mm vic liner lock, but I dont hate the lock as implemented, its just a bit weird.

The lock only bugs me when trying to access the scissors. It blocks my thumb.

I got rid of all my Evos. The scales + the lock hindering access to scissors. Still have a few Classic scaled ones with padlock. Not a such big problem on those.

S10 user and love the lock.  I've not had any issues with the lock snagging or hot spots.  Admittedly I haven't used it in a while but thats due to my love of the Swisschamp.

This.

I have a couple of Wenger/Delemont S lockers. The release lever is badly placed to my mind, but more importantly it makes the people friendly SAK illeagal

Strongly agreed. Fix the position of the lock and it would be perfect. As it is, the scissors are remarkably difficult to access... :(

It's unnecessary

It's uncomfortable

It's LESS safe IMHO as you need to put a digit in the path of the blade to unlock it

It completely ruined the Wenger line for me, and for a long time you couldn't get a 85mm Wenger with in-line Phillips without the awful padlock. Unfortunately this has carried on into the Vic Delemont range too. Needless to say it has stopped me buying knives that I would have got if the padlock wasn't there.

I have never seen the need for a lock on any SAK. I have never owned a Wenger. When I purchased my first SAK years ago I bought a Victorinox because I thought it was better looking than a Wenger, still do.  I applaud Victorinox for keeping the Wenger models alive but there is a reason why they went under. If I want a locking blade, I will buy another knife, not a SAK.

For sure there's a reason why Wenger went under, actually they are many, for sure. But is hard if not impossible to impute lock mechanism for Wenger's cease.
And there is for sure a reason why Victorinox have kept Wenger's locking mechanism for ten years now >:D
