I just went to a short night forest hiking route with some friends... we went to the local medieval fortress called "Medvedgrad" above the town of Zagreb (Croatia).

(Image removed from quote.)

Of course, we had to take crappy night photos of my SAK, my friend's hunting knife and my friend's brandy  :D

(Image removed from quote.)

What a fun destination.  Always a great time with friends especially a night trek.

Absolutely :tu: I love night hikes or even simple walks, especially through the forest.

Headlamp on your forehead is a must for me for night hikes - I love having both hands free.

BTW I forgot to mention I somehow stood on a nail somewhere along the path  :o Thankfully my shoes are really thick and firm, it didn't reach my foot. I pulled it out with my SwissTool pliers - after this experience I am even more willing to carry my SwissTool on every hiking/camping adventure.

 :like:

I know there are some on here who think pliers are superfluous on hikes, but I always carry some. I have had to pull thorny twigs from my soles several times, plus it makes handling hot items easier, or pulling needles through heavy materials when doing field repairs. In fact I use pliers far more than a folding saw blade, which many deem to be indispensable.

 :salute:

I also carry my Swisstool on hikes.  A headlamp is a must for me as well.  While I have other lights available its always a good idea to have free hands.

Thanks Sync'

The landscape here varies greatly from semi-arid to alpine. You have places that seem lunar and others with nice, thick forest -and bears and wildboars.

went hunting today.

Yesterday I went for a long drive.

I saw a mouflon (agrino) an animal rarely seen in the wild, which is a national symbol.

Quickly becoming a habit to go for early Sunday morning hikes at Farm Windhoek http://www.farmwindhoek.com/

The dogs enjoy not having to be on leashes, and we vary the routes we take so the average hike is 10-16km.

Passed Sunday we did 14.38km in 3:01 starting at 06:30 and we went looking for hills to get the heartbeat up and sweat out some poison.

For those that clicked on the link........imagine the landscape in a dead, grey and brown.........the drought is bad....

3 pics and no info......let's fix that.  :salute:

Went on a game drive with friends this passed Sunday on farm Moltkeblick.

The farm is about 15km outside the city and a small part bordering the highway was developed into an upmarket housing estate.  Wonderful concept, you buy a 1 hectare plot, fence off a piece in the middle and build your home, wildlife move freely between the houses.

Anyway, so much for the lives of the rich and famous, even more amazing was the numbers and variety of game we spotted despite a late start......a short list:
Giraffe
Eland
Oryx/Gemsbok
Zebra
Impala
Red Hartebeest
Wildebeest, honestly not sure if they were Black, Blue or both
Springbok
Duiker
Steenbok
Warthog
several Mongoose

I'm sure I missed something, but needless to say I was amazed.  Cattle and game poaching is a serious problem in our country, and this close to the capitol city that's even more of a problem.
I assume the housing estate on the North border, mountains on the Southern border and land owned by the president on the Western border keeps these animals safe for now.

Other than raking and pruning around the new rented place I'm at took a nice hike in the local mountains.

It was about 40F till we got to the top of the summit 6500ft above sea level but well worth it.  My newish pair of hiking boots were so pleasurable to have on.  My feet were feeling great during and after.  There was a light amount of snow and some ice left at the summit as a storm blew thru recently.

I'd post pics but for some reason Sierra wont let me drag and drop to preview.

Last Sunday we hiked up Kaiser Wilhelm, a prominent large hill/small mountain right on the outskirts of town.

The hike was 12.5km and it took us 3.5 hours with a total elevation change of 2030m.......what fun.

We started before sunrise and made the summit by 7:20am........by necessity due to the heat, it was 35C by the time we got home.

Megan and I decided to go for a hike the other day in Gatineau Park.  It was really more of a stroll as I have a lot of problems getting too far.  We ended up only going a couple of miles all told, but there were a lot of elevation changes too, which didn't help matters!

Other than the icy and snowy bits the walk was fairly easy going overall.

Yeah, we have had a few adventures in Gatineau Park and really enjoy it there.  Unfortunately a lot of it is closed for the winter, so our adventures might be a bit limited over the next few months.

Here are some of our other adventures in Gatineau if you are interested:

Breakfast in Gatineau

Summit Hike in Wakefield
