What is the best way to remove patina?
on: July 19, 2008, 08:55:08 PM
I am thinking of removing the patina from my Carbon V Trail master;

Does anyone know what is the best way to do it without me affecting the etching on it?

Cheers guys.
I'm back!!

Normally I would agree, but I think I would rather this knife without.

My only success has been with a buffing wheel on my Dremel tool. I'd be interested in finding something easier myself.  :-\
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I was going to sugest a buffering wheel too, see how well it comes off with normal soap and water first, failing that it's the dremel of VERY fine sand paper :)

I'll put what they say;

"Never dull" The wadding stuff that comes in a can will do the trick. You can also use it to blend a un uniform patina too.

i use a fine sandpaper like 1200 and up, or i use a scotchbrite pad or some super fine steel wool...basically any really fine abrasive.
you can also use metal polish...a common one i hear about is simichrome or flitz

with the steel wool/scotchbrite, you might rub out some of the gray color, but as long as you don't scrub too much you should still have a nice patina left over...

I use super fine steel wool or 1500 wet dry followed by buffing it using a little buffing wheel attached to my drill press.

The neverdull will not make it new and shiny unless you polish it for a long time. You can use it to more or less blend the patina, and even it out.

If you use 0000 steel wool or a scotchbrite pad, add WD-40 to it. It will cut down on the stratching of the blade. It gives a nice satin finish.

Man, I need to get some Flitz..I had some years ago, and that stuff works wonders...I am having trouble finding it in the store lately.

Flitz would be my choice after the above-mentioned remedies (oooo steel wool and WD 40). I love patina and think it gives a knife a lot of character. It makes the user wonder where the knife has been and how it achieved that well-worn look.

It all depends how deep you go when sanding it away :)

Brasso does an ok job, but it doesn't fully remove it. I have used scotch-brite on a blade, but if you have a razor sharp edge, kiss it goodbye because the scotch brite will dull the hell out of a knife, but its the best way to remove a patina I found. I was given an old case that had somewhat a patina and had alot of rust, but I used scotch-brite and some wd-40 and it was like a new blade, but I had to resharpen it. Can split hairs with it now, but it is in my knife collection.

It's not SanMai it's a Carbon V one, I doubt you'd be able to get a San mai blade to accept an etch :)

Like Mike said, it's Carbon V - hence the patina.  ;)

Thanks for the suggestions.  :)  I had a quick go with brasso, but didn't have much luck.  I think I need to adopt a liking for the patina rather than finding a way to remove it.  :D
