Badabing , yay ya got it. It is a very odd tool the Tough Tool l. Full of good ideas but has the ergonomics of a 3 legged rabid camel. My one is the original model . I will post some more pics & thoughts down the track. Still would like to know what purpose the grooves on the Phillips head have

That would be my guess too. I've got some Black & Decker phillips hex bits that have the same type of grooves.

I thought it was so you could REALLY get some gunk up in there and rust your philips head even faster. :tu:

Liking that fluted corkscrew, great shot  :tu: how are the fluting more effective compared to the new corkscrew?

They're not.  The new style corkscrew has never failed me.  How can anything be more effective than that?

I think I asked this before, but can't remember if anyone replied - what was the purpose of the "groove" on the old corkscrew?

Yah, it seems like a lot of extra work unless there were some advantage to it?

Hmm..well cork is like a sponge..it's stiff, but it does expand and contract around stuff (contracts into the bottle opening for example, then expands and hold itself firmly in place).

So I'm guessing after the screw is...screwed...into the cork, the cork expands into the fluting, giving it some extra grip.

I've wondered about this as well.  I just can't see the advantage of the groove.  Why would the smooth corkscrew 'slip'?  It's the spiral that is doing the work.  my thought is that it seems more likely that the groove is just a side product of the manufacturing process that they used to use, you do see some that have a very light trace of a groove that can't possibly make a difference.  Like I say I'm not convinced either way but I do think they look nice.  :)

I wonder if one of our members with Vic contacts could ask? I'm really interested to know.

On the last SAK I made from bits I used the CS with the groove, purely because it looks nice, since then I've been wondering what it's all about!
I used to come here a lot.

Yes, do tell.  So, the fluted corkscrew pulled a cork more effectively than the regular corkscrew pulls a cork?  If both corks are pulled, how is one more effective than the other?

I'm not going to do a search on SOSAK, but if my memory serves me, past discussions of this topic revealed that the flute was to reduce splitting of the cork.

........ past discussions of this topic revealed that the flute was to reduce splitting of the cork.

Blimey, what's the science behind that, can you recall? It sounds like a good reason, I just can't figure why it might help  ??? Maybe it didn't and that's why they changed it  ???

So many questions......
I used to come here a lot.

Perhaps it's the same principle as the groove on some hunting knives (and the claws of all natural predators): allow the air (and/or blood) to go out as the "implement" goes in?
