Olfa Cutter (Hobby and Crafts knife)
on: May 26, 2015, 11:47:03 PM
So I got this new cutter, which I think is kinda interesting as it has a very thick blade.

Now, I haven't used it yet, apart from a couple of test cuts, but the grip is very comfortable. The blade is huge for a cutter (55mm edge) and its very strong (there is almost no play when opened and secured).
I think there is enough blade that you could sharpen it, which would allow for an interesting combo with a blade that can both be sharpened and/or replaced.

Dimensions: 116 x 22.5 x 5.5 mm (without the screw, with the screw its 10 mm thick).
Weight: 50g (that is a very rough estimate, as my scales are not that precise)

Pros
- Cheap (the knife itself goes for about 8USD)
- Large solid blade with long edge
- Simple construction (not much that can go wrong)

Cons
- Blade itself runs at 1 USD /piece
- Blades are only available in specialized shops (larger arts and crafts stores).

They have those in the US. They call them Exacto Knives.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

You mean X-acto knives?

There is a ton of brands like these, however all of them have relatively thin blades like scalpels or thin break-off blades.
This one here is a beast with a thick and stiff blade. I think that is what makes it interesting.

Olfa is to X-acto what Spyderco is to SOG.
Might look similar but one of them pays a lot more attention to quality.

I have a couple Olfa snap off cutters  (the stainless steel ones) and they are like tiny lasers.
