Got these the other day (cheers again Al).  Nice enough that I'll take pleasure in owning them, but not too nice to use.

I am sure you will love these in use.

The CS one (called a Sisu) is excellent and priced as high as the moon if you can find one. Both it and the Finn Bear are based on the Tapio Wirkkala original made by Hackman.

I have an orig on the way... (lost the first in the fire) it should be here next week.  :mail:

That looks nice.
The finn bear has the same shape, but just looks and feels cheap. Ill see if I can find it.

I've had a play with the Finn Bear and thought it was OK.  However I'm not sure why I'd buy it instead of a Mora, Hulatafors, Marttiinni or whatever.

My main issues with the finn bear are:
-Its not a scandi grind.
- the handle ergonomics are horrible. I can feel hot spots forming after only a few seconds of use.
- the handle is real plasticy, like a cheap toy.

I have the CS version of the Canadian Belt knife and it's actually pretty good but on the Finn Bear, (looking at your pic) I can see how that handle would work on your hand. The orig is smooth and feels great in your hand...floats almost. I used my old one a lot before the fire and it's a good field knife. It's not a full tang knife so I wouldn't get too rough with it.

Here's my old blade.... :(

Would it be possible to clean it, heat treat it and give it a new handle?

Probably. I had intended to do just that but life happened and my health got worse so it's on the back burner for now. There is a place here in Texas that will heat treat it and I always thought a stick handle of antler or wood with a single cross pin might be doable.

Then we have very different opinions on the Finn Bear :tu: :)

Or you could just glue it in the handle.
Either way, that would look nice!

 :salute:

I consider it a cheapo knife that won't bring tears if it gets lost or broken, and while it does feel exceedingly cheap, that handle does give good grip with wet/slimy hands. It was my camping "food" knife for a while (which now tends to be a CS Roach Belly or Boker TUF). It never got much use on anything other than food, but it always did what I asked it to.

If anyone is interested in having a work of art that happens to be a Puukko you really do need to check out JT Palikko: http://www.kp-art.fi/jt/index_eng.html

He's a friend of a friend and I've met him a couple of times.  Couldn't ask to meet a nicer guy.  Sadly I don't have a Puukko from him, but he did make me my two throwing axes. 8)

Gareth,JT's knives are fantastic.Functional works of art knives certainly could be used to describe his knives. They are more interesting than either a functional knife or work of art knife.

That's just my opinion and I'm sticking to it.LOL
