My first Spyderco!
on: July 23, 2008, 02:38:57 AM
I picked up a Spyderco Tenacious the other day and wanted to share some shots with you guys.  This is my first Spyderco and I love it. For those of you who don't know the Tenacious is the first main line Spyderco to be made in China. Don't let that put you off, this knife screams quality from the fist moment I touched it.

It features all the quality materials as the other Spyderco knifes. The handles are black G-10 laminate. It features a textured liner lock and has a textured spine for your thumb when open. The G-10 handles ergonomics make the Tenacious very comfortable to hold.

I would recommend this knife to anyone. Don't let the fact that it's made in China scare you off from picking up this knife you won't be sorry, especially when you see the price.  Some knife sites have it for sale for $32.00. When you get a hold of it you would think that you paid more the twice that for it.

If the China thing still bothers some of you here is a thread on BladeForums where Spyderco founder and president Sal Glessor explains why he decided to make a main line Spyderco on mainland China. It pretty interesting. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=518134.

I remember form your collection photos Spoon that you have a great Spyderco collection. I have to say that in the week or so that I have carried it that it has become one of my favorite knives. It's so comfortable to hold and use. I remember seeing lots of other peoples EDC shots were they have to put zip ties in there Spydy hole on the knife blade . Not so with the Tenacious. Easy to open and close. Smooth as silk. I have really nothing negative to say about it. A really great knife.

The zip tie is not for easy opening (spydercos are probably the easiest opening knives out there), it's for ghetto wave. :)

You're going to need more now.  ;) I recommend the Endura or Delica next, the 4th generation versions are amazing.

If I understand correctly the zip-tie is put onto most knives with a hole to facilitate a bootleg "wave" opening. I've never tried it since I think the zip-ties are tacky but I have used zip-ties to help opening my holey knives that have chamfered edges (most of the Benchmades I've had).

Here's a video showing the Zip-tie effect.

Thanks guys. Now the zip-tie thing makes more sense. I was looking at Spydercos online and the one that caught my eyes was this one

the UK pen Knife. I really didn't mind that it didn't lock. That's when I found the Tenacious. I thought it looked similar and didn't mind the lesser steel. I like liner locks to lock backs so the Tenacious looked the right choice.

The Tenacious is a great knife. I have had mine for a while. The only thing I miss is a choil on the blade to choke up on.

Congrats on your new knife. Spydercos are real addictive. :)

I love Spydercos. I have a Navigator II I'm carrying right now. I'm hoping to pick up another one soon, possibly even a Byrd model. They're an excellent value too and I like cheap. If the Tenacious wasn't so big I'd consider it too but I'm looking for something under 4". Right now I'm debating between the Meadowlark and the Crow.

here's the Nav2

That Byrd Crow looks good to me, as does the Raven.

I've had a Byrd Cara Cara plain edge with G10 scales for the better part of a year.  Great bang-for-the-buck beater knife that's held up well through lots of heavy cutting.  Holds an edge pretty well and still locks up tight after lots of use.

Since the Cara Cara was so inexpensive, I can carry and use it without worries about breakage, loss, or theft.  Byrds are somewhat lacking in the fit and finish department compared to Spydercos, but provide probably 95% of Spyderco functionality at a much lower price.

The Nav2 does look fine   If only they did it without a lock.

Guess I'll just have to wait for the Urban.  I seem to have been waiting for that forever  :(

That Tenacious looks great; I love the fact that even the low-end(price-wise) Spyderco knives are good quality.  I definitely have to pick up one of those.  I have a Native that I bought from WalMart and served me well camping, but a liner-locked Spyderco that is unbeatable to me.

Thanks for sharing.
