Tom it's good to still see some GP's in use. Around here it steady boring diet od wide body GE's. Some of the local and short lines are still running GP's. Coal, grain, double stack trains are mostly GE's

You mostly see the Geeps around here because most of the rail traffic in the city itself is industurial/commercial switching.  Old Jersey Central sidings and small yards still in use 100 years after the tracks were laid.  The NJ Transit and Amtrak service runs over what are known as the Elizabeth Arches, a massive bridge through downtown built in 1903.  I'll have to get some pics of them, it's impressive. :tu:  At the port, CSX and NS have their big engines, the big GE's.  Elizabethport is one of the largest container terminals in the world, from the Turnpike you can see huge trains being formed.  My phone camera sucks, otherwise I'd get some pics.

Elizabeth Arches sounds like a  8) bridge. I hope you can get some pics someday. Elizabeth Port would be an intersting place to spend some time railfanning. CSX and NS still run some older power. Some of it blows through here once in a while. I few years back a DRGW tunnel motor came through and I got really excited. But didnt have a camera at the time so missed out getting a shot of it. I thinking it was the 5385 but may not remeber correctly. I'm moving and my notes are packed up so dont have access to them at the moment. Of coure it had a UP patch on it by the time I saw it but was still in DRGW paint. Here's a link the some DRGW tunnel motors info.

I was able to find my my notes and the DRGW tunnel motor was 5398. Here's some info on that one: D&RGW 5398 was retired by UP on 19 December 2000; moved to National Railway Equipment at Mount Vernon, Illinois, in November 2001. Show it had a NRE patch not a UP patch as I thought in the other post.     :)

I deal with trains every day- not your pretty commuter or passenger trains though, usually dirty cargo trains.

I also regularly deal with gantry cranes that run on rails- does that count for anything?

Anyone interested in the Mt Washington cog railroad should check out Mt Pilatus, near Luzern, Switzerland.

Coming up the front side is one of the longest cable car routes in existence. Going down the backside is the world's steepest cog railroad, 46*.

How did I miss this topic ...

Anyway, Mt Pilatus is already on my "to do list" for next month  ;).

Definitely worth a visit. The other cog railroad I rode is the Gornergrat near Zermatt. Had a brief glimpse of the Matterhorn (most guide books don't mention its only visible about one day out of three), and a tremendous view of the Gornergrat glacier coming down off the Mt Rosa massif.

Have a great trip!

Busy day trainwise around here yesterday.  First off was this Geep switching the warehouse next door.....

And as I got near the bridge in the afternoon, what do I see?

Four of them, all six-axles.  Two had wide cabs for sure.  Pretty cool, they were just sitting there.  :tu:
