Legendary Autographs - The Signed Tool Club
on: October 30, 2023, 12:12:51 AM
About a week ago I had the privilege of touring the Leatherman Factory in Portland, hosted by Tim Leatherman himself.

This was a trip of a lifetime for me and while I’ll post more trip details over time to share the experience, and that which was shared with me, let this be a new club for some show and tell.

Show us your signed your tool, and share your story so we can all enjoy it even more.

This DLC Cap Crimper PST was signed by Tim during my visit along with my Darkside.  Ben Rivera also visited with us for about an hour and a half.  Ben signed the Darkside and I was pleased he also signed my Clean Contact Carabiner.

I’m not sure how many times Ben has signed tools in the past, but after we had him practice on a spare Surge handle, he took to it like a champ.  Such a wonderful experience and I’m honored they both took the time to meet with me and share so many stories.

No signed tools here, but that sounds like an amazing day!

Catch a glimpse of anything special in the factory?

All of it was special to me.

Nothing unreleased was seen.  This was 2 days after the ARC launch though.  My focus was on the stories, the people, and the history so maybe I missed the new and upcoming.

Pic from five years ago. Still carry and use it every day. It isn't quite factory any more though.

That’s so cool.  What’s the story of how you got it signed?  Share some more info so we can all enjoy.

I had read in Tim Leatherman Going Australia. :-) that there was a 35th anniversary tour.
After confirming it was also coming to New Zealand I started the Tim Leatherman Visit, What Should zoidberg Do.
I was pretty happy to make the guest list representing MTo.

Quote from: zoid
Quick recap of the day.

Friday begins with some very heavy rain through the early hours and into the morning.
Then it starts to snow, yeah, three weeks off summer, timing.

Having dealt with rain, snow, flooding, animals, kids, visitors, work and yet another broken windscreen...
5pm couldn't come around quick enough but eventually it did and I was heading into the city.

Found the venue easily enough.
Got changed and put my nice clean MTo anniversary t-shirt on.
Randomly picked some modified Leatherman MTs to take in with the two I had chosen earlier to get signed.

Now to mingle.

Walked in and there was Tim chatting with a small group.
To one side Chau was playing table tennis with Nathan Rarere.

All of a minute passed by before one of the Leatherman Super Fan winners, Chrystian, recognized my MTo t-shirt.
If you check out his instagram here you can watch (I took the video) him receive his prize bag.

The evening flew by and there I was in the MT signing queue.
I introduced myself as a MTo peep and he asked if I knew Grant?
Nar, never heard of him I replied I mumbled something about maybe knowing him.
Tim signed the Flair for my better half while I talked nonstop about it getting run over and how much she liked and used it.
As he signed the Signal I asked if he was interested in seeing a few of the customized MTs I had with me.

(Image removed from quote.)

Having got the nod, I quickly displayed some of the MTs and Tim made some comments and took some pics.
About then I remembered there were still heaps of people waiting.
To show my appreciation for years of enjoying Leathermans I handed one back to him together with a MTo poker chip.

(Image removed from quote.)

Yeah think that pretty much covers it.
Chrystian had missed the last bus so I dropped him off where he was staying.
Then I drove back out to the country listening to music really loudly.

A couple months later I received an email from Tim.

Quote from: Tim
I feel lucky to still have the tool because when I arrived in Australia I found I had forgotten I had put it in my carry-on briefcase, rather than transferring it to my checked luggage.

Pretty funny, the Flair that Tim signed for my better half was also nearly taken by airport security after she left it in her handbag.
Five years on the Flair is still in her handbag.
And the Signal is in my pocket.

I won this first year production Skeley here at MTO in a contest for reviews  That was around 2008 and I was very new to the MT world then :ahhh I carried this one quite a bit over the years and then in 2016 I was fortunate to meet Tim Leatherman and took a few different tools for him to sign :dd: this was one that I definitely wanted signed and was fortunate to get it there 8)

I have some more and will try to get them out or find pics of them :tu:

Garage Batch #005 40th Anniversary Tool

Signed by Tim and Ben during my trip to the factory last month.  This is truly a special piece as it was my carry tool for the previous month.  Both the founder and CEO took so much time and care in showing me all we could see and signing tools for me.  Truly a remarkable day, one I will never forget.
