Help with Identifying a Date
on: March 06, 2025, 04:20:39 AM
Hi all, I am wondering about this shield change on the Classic. You can see the larger shield on the left and the smaller more current shield on the right. Does anyone know when this change to a smaller shield went into effect?

Thanks!

Is the one on the Left an inlayed emblem?

And, the right a screen print?

Possible the left is a WENGER variant after Victorinox assumed manufacturing?

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

They are both inlay. The knife on the left is much older. It has the Victoria tang stamp. I believe the shield on the left to be nickel silver and the shield on the right to be stainless

Good spot, but I don’t know the answer - hopefully someone knowledgeable will be along at some point!

According to Urs Wyss from Victorinox, the tweezers were introduced in 1902 with a nickel-silver head, in 1957 it was switched to aluminium, and in 1978 the grey plastic head we see today was introduced.

Thank you. I have been able to date the tweezers. I'm more interested in dating the change of the shield size change. It appears to have been bigger in the past.

Well according to our 91mm dating spreadsheet - The shield changed from NS to SS in 1980

And if we assume that the 58mm shields and the larger to smaller shields happened at the same time - Then we may have an answer?   ???    :dunno:    :tu:

Thanks for the weigh-in Huntsman. I've actually turned up some new evidence. I've discovered an in-between sized shield as well. It looks like there were at least two shield size reductions over the Classic line. I plan to post up a new thread with new pics sometime in the near future
