A quick look inside the Pioneer X
on: April 08, 2016, 09:35:19 PM
I took apart the Pioneer X I had with the intention to finish my long neglected 111mm Trekker mod I started ages ago, so I snapped a couple of pics for those that might be curious.

Pretty much standard stuff, the only thing to note is the new spring, and opposite side nail nick.

Here is what the factory spring looks like vs the one I came up with.

Im going to use this new factory spring and normal scissors for a marlin spike mod, and the scissors from the X are going into my OHO trekker.

Cheers!

A historical moment, the first factory Pioneer X to be disassembled!

That Trekker mod should be

The nice thing about that is the framelock 111mm trekkers have 3.0 mm pivots... and these scissors do too so I dont even have to change them.  :D

Oh no, I'm getting an urge to further modify my Master RT now if no drilling is involved...

I would feel guilty about the leftovers though, I would have to send them to you.  ;)

Wonder why they didn't use a thinner stock for the scissors.  It would have made the entire package thinner, probably equal to the Farmer in thickness.

The finish on the springs looks pretty cheap and nasty, compared with how nice older springs look.

Hi Syph!

Is the plan here for the OHO trekker to become four layer? EDIT: In another thread this is answered by Syph --- "...scissors from pioneer x to OHO trekker.  The layer will go between saw layer and blade layer."

Do you think it could work with the scissors layer instead of the saw? To make a more weight friendly three layer?

Cheers

Hi Syph, Would you mind sharing some details on the marlin spike mod you have planned?

Yes.  Thats the only way to do this since the scissors backspring has no backtool.  IF I dropped the saw layer with the phillips backtool, then the scissors layer would be the back layer and have no back tool and I couldnt re-use the standard back scale.

The only other option I can think of is to get the scales from a sentinel or similar that has no backtools, then you could have a 3 layer with standard scales, or of course if it will be custom scales it doesnt matter.

I layed out the parts just now and will assemble after dinner tonight.  I'll post some pics to make this clearer.

This is how I made the Recon in fact. I wanted a clip from the Sentinel without the CS or Phillips, but 2 layers like the Nomad with the big locking SD. The back outer liner and clip scale are from a Sentinel Clip (a standard Sentinel would also work), and the rest is from a Trailmaster. I could add scissors on the opposite side of the blade, but the nail nick would be on the wrong side, until now...

Remember to chew your food Syph!  ;)

I didnt finish assembly but here are some pics to show the configuration.  It works perfect and wouldnt be possible without the pioneer X goofy nail nick.  :D

So here is what my super trekker, or trekker x will look like.

Thanks!   :tu:

I dug up my old thread on 111mm work and I started this mod 3 years ago! :D I had always planned to make a nail nick on this side and complete the mod, but when I saw Vic was releasing these scissors I knew it was fate.  :D

That's going to be beautiful. My mod skills stop at changing scales :)

And I finally got around to doing this.  The scissors from my pioneer x are now in a OHO Trekker.  :D

I put a proper point on the blade too, it drives me nuts its comes blunt.
