Diamond "strike anywhere matches"!
on: November 30, 2008, 05:03:19 AM
I went to my local Army Barracks store, I bought quite a few things. one of the things I bought, was Diamond "strike anywhere matches". They are SO cool! Does anyone else use them? You really can't find them anywhere nowadays!

Nope all I can find around here nowadays is the strike on box Diamond matches. The old strike anywhere seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur. I`m glad you found some LM123.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

Don't think they sell them in the US, but it's the best known brand here.

By the way, I can light them with my thumb nail!

Be careful not to get any of the lit part under your thumb nail the burn hurts real bad. I know from past experience. But it is cool way to light a match. They will light up on your jeans as well if you wear jeans.

I got mine online since none of the stores I've tried had them in stock. They are restricted in many areas (on flights they are classified dangerous goods) due to the phosphorous in the match head (the part that makes it strike anywhere). Try lighting one on glass, brick, wood, and about anywhere you want. Can't seem to light them of someones face like they do in cowboy movies though.  :P

"Scottish Bluebell" has to be the most common match brand here in Scotland.  After doing a bit of Googling I found that they are made by the same folks who produce the Swan Vesta brand, a company called Swedish Match.  Here in Scotland the perception is that "strike anywhere" are proper matches and the "box only" are cheap and nasty.

Here box only matches are called "safety matches" and are the most abundant next to the paper matches you get at the grocery stores.

We have safety matches here as well, they are probably the most common type.

Forgot all about Scottish Bluebell  :-[  To be honest I still tend to see Swan Vestas more, but then again i'm not much of a match user  :-\

I got my last package of three 2 years ago in Maine. I remember something about having a hard time finding some. Now the problem with mine. Do you think the dogs at customs will smell the ones I forgot to take out of the match safe I sent to Miko?

Never heard of Diamond matches before.  In Canada, we have Redbird matches (made by Eddy Match Company) which are also "strike anywhere" matches.  They're really good matches to have.

This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

It seems a bit strange you having issues getting strike anywhere matches.  Over here I can walk into any corner shop or supermarket and buy a box  :-\

Strike on the box (yes we call them safety matches too) are common as well but you usually have a choice.  I prefer the strike anywhere ones as they don't tend to "spit" like the safety matches.

I use them. I know they are hard to find now because they require a haz mat fee of $25 to be shipped anywhere.

One problem with Swan Vestas is if you do use the sandpaper on the box to strike it tends to clog long before the box is empty.
Also they aren't that easy to light on anything other than a really rough surface.

Yeah when I was younger it was common here to see both side by side as well :( but not today

Funny you can't have locking MTs in UK but we can't have strike anywhere matches  seems rather stupid if you ask me but it is probably due to it's phosphorus content (drug addicts use the phosphorus in some of the more common drugs :ahhh ) plus you have to sign for very common over the counter drugs now as well, well certain kinds of cold medicines as well for the same reason :P

I needed to show the cashier my ID to purchase a small bottle of lighter fluid

...BUT I can fill up a 5 gallon container of GASOLINE at any gas station with no problem...go figure!

Thats crazy. Whats worse is you can't buy beer without an ID but you can buy denatured alcohol which is poisonous very easily.

I know the store in my town sells them. In fact at that store, if you wanted wooden matches, all you could get were strike anywheres. It's been a little while( a few months) since I've been to that store, but it should still be that way. I prefer them to the strike on box kind. A person does have to be a little more careful with them though. I remember that when I was a kid, I made guard towers and buildings for my army men out of strike anywhere matches. This worked great until one day when I was done playing i tossed one of the guard towers onto a toy pile. When I glanced back I could see that the tower was starting to ignite :o. Luckily, the matches were starting to go bad so it didn't go up very fast and I was able to get the tower out of the pile and into the sink, so no harm was done. I got rid of all my matchstick buildings after that.
