Damage to a Huntsman
on: July 02, 2015, 01:30:36 PM
I was using the flathead on my Huntsman for some light prying.

It did the job fine, but now I've noticed some play in the awl and in the flathead. Also, the scale on that side is now slightly loose and is rattling around a little.

Obviously the prying was to blame, but any ideas what happened (given I was expecting a broken flathead if anything)/a way to fix it?

The prying wasn't what I'd have called heavy duty or beyond its capabilities.

Depends what exactly has happened.

You might be able to pop the scales off, peen everything tight and put the scales back on.

If it is worst than that I could take a look at it for you.

I don't think it's too bad, there's no physical damage apart from the play in the flathead and the awl, as well as the relate loose scale. I'll have a look in the morning, but might take you up on that offer - this one has some sentimental value.

Ok, so I've popped the scales off - noticed they look really worn, probably been dropped a few too many times, so might be time to look for some more scales.

Anyway, I've never worked on a SAK before - how does one go about peening everything tight?

A small ball-peen hammer, and a solid, hard surface to work on. Check frequently for tool tightness: you can always tighten tools some more, but you can never loosen them if too tight.
