It's a TGE Wernland Rusteri. I just won it in an auction along with a beat up C Anderson Mora. Has a neat sheath too. A google search came up with zero results....

Swedish? Finnish?    ???

Well, it's Finnish based on the translation of "Rusteri" which is "ruster"  whatever that is.....

  • Look at all those shiny sharp things.
I think it might be Swedish knife. I have not heard of one. Handle is typical Laplander handle, but blade is not so typical for laplanders.

One thing has to be remembered, is that when talking about Lapland, region considers northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Could it be Vermland? Vermland is region in Sweden.

Maybe @Grath could be more helpful here. Remember that we are just waking up here.

Per the article Crow directed me too, there was a link to a Noregian knife blog about Stavanger Staal, the steel producer for this knife.

This apperars to be a very early SS knife from one of the "peasant smiths" (local independent knife makers) associated with Stavanger Staal. One mentioned in the blog:

"One of the "person resident peasant blacksmiths" who made knives for steelworks, was Tønnes G. Kverneland. There are knives with blades that are stamped both "Stavanger Staal" and "TGK", and with one of these pistons.
I do not know if there may have been other "peasant smiths" involved than Tønnes and son Trygve."

Not my maker.

They're here!!!! The C Andersson is pretty beat up but tight and serviceable! The Norwegian knife looks unused. Looking at the stamp in person, I think this is an identical knife to one in Crow's link above!!  The Trygve Kverneland stamp is identical!!!  :2tu:

The knife is stamped "Trygve Kverneland, Rust-free" .......................
Therefore, the surprise was great when I after a round of googling learned that Trygve let down his Kverneland knife production in the 1950s, and that he was one of the first in this country to use stainless steel in the blades. The steel is produced at Stavanger Staal, who has produced stainless steel since 1916, and was one of the foremost in the world at the time (they actually exported steel to Sheffield in England)."

Stavanger-Staal

"Herboende peasant smiths"
Rogaland had two factories that made knives. Brothers Ole Gabriel Kverneland (now Kverneland ASA) and Tønnes Gabrielsen Kverneland (now TKS AS) founded their own. There were also several smaller companies with a certain blade production. Factories exists the still, but they no longer creates knives.

One of the "person resident peasant blacksmiths" who made knives for steelworks, was Tønnes G. Kverneland. There are knives with blades that are stamped both "Stavanger Staal" and "TGK", and with one of these pistons.
I do not know if there may have been other "peasant smiths" involved than Tønnes and son Trygve.

http://kniver.blogspot.com/search/label/Stavanger-Staal

The blade is SK 11 which was" "the only knife steel that knife blacksmiths joined with Stavange-Staal...."

SK 11 is a single carbon steel with this content:

    C: about 1.10%
    Mn: about 0.25%
    Si: about 0.20%

Many Norwegian knife blacksmiths and knife factories have used steel from Stavanger Staal. Most notable among smiths are steel quality SK 11. Occasionally we also find knives with blades stamped Stavanger-Staal, sometimes in combination with piston TGK.
http://kniver.blogspot.com/search/label/Stavanger-Staal

In 1930 founded the Tønnes ' son Trygve Kverneland (1905-1984) his own company-t. Kverneland-to produce the scythes, knives and scissors. Later took over the farm machinery here too. Today company TKS as.

So it's early SS (SK-11) from the 1950's made by resident peasant blacksmith Trygve Kverneland associated with Stavanger Staal......in Western Norway (Rogaland).

Thanks to Crow and Grathr who absolutely made all this research possible!!!

Those are great finds. Rarely you find that old puukko in such good condition. And that birch handle is just amazing.
