Four Layer Face-off
on: July 16, 2015, 04:54:53 PM
For me, it is the Explorer, with a close 2nd place to the Mountaineer, since Inline Phillips > file.

Deluxe Tinker.  Those little pliers are surprisingly useful.  :tu:

Voted for Mountaineer, although I'd prefer a wood saw instead of the scissors.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Explorer - hands down the most fun and useful SAK - Love it. Just needs a wood saw.

I voted for mountaineer. Explorer is great, but you can use can opener tip on most phillips screws and mountaineer adds tools for metal.

Deluxe Tinker if I have to stick with a stock model, otherwise I'd swap the scissors for a file/fine flat driver layer.  Deluxe Automobile Special, if you like.

Hmmm, I thought the S18 would have at least one vote by now due to the locking blade/saw/file combination...

If I felt like being awkward I'd say a Traveller Lite :)  Basically an Explorer Plus but with a light in place of the magnifier, and the clock/barometer/thermometer/altimeter added.  However it's way too expensive so realistically I'd go for the Explorer with the Plus scales.

I have to say though, while the Explorer's magnifier is sometimes fun to use, for me it's not an essential.  When I get around to removing the pliers layer from my Cybertool 34, then I'll have my ideal 4-layer toolset.

I had that same thought several times. However, when I carry my CT34, I do find uses for the pliers. I don't necessarily MISS them when I don't have it, but I use it pretty often when I do. Kind of like scissors. I can "make do" many times with a sharp knife, but scissors is The Right Tool for the Job. Same with the little pliers.

I think I'm talking myself into thicker and thicker SAKs...  :-\

I voted for others. For me it is the Grand Prix. I´ve used every tool on mine. It´s thinner and more pocket friendly than a Deluxe Tinker (and I have a P4 on my Keychain).

Deluxe Tinker  :D

4th layer choices in order of priority for me
1. Pliers - love em - small strong finger tips
2. File - more use in a city than the small saw
3. Saw - sweet but I don't run into many random sawing tasks. I can usually plan ahead and bring my bacho or Swisstool.
4. Phillips & Mag glass - I don't like the mag glass, and Phillips are the most common tool where I'm from. I have them everywhere. I have a rambler on my keys too. The can opener is a Phillips driver.

Has to be current production.

Huntsman.

Partner it with a PST rescued from the TSA (Troll and Smurf Agency) and you've got everything you could need. Except a light. Oh, wait, three musketeers, there needs to be a light.

Was ready to be all you all are dumb and the Explorer is best fools.

Then I saw all the Deluxe Tinker love and I kind of feel what you are putting down. Might have to get me one for some smaller SAK plier goodness.

Oh almost forgot, you guys are dumb and Explorer is best.

Voted Huntsman (with nylon scales).

The Mountaineer was a close second, as was Other because Deluxe Climber.

I vote for the Explorer.

I have the Fieldmaster and Deluxe Tinker, but don't reach for either nearly as much as the Explorer.  I don't have a Mountaineer yet, but find myself looking at it more and more.
