Here is the my tool for oktober:

Its a german SAKalike made in solingen. I think by Richartz. I got it from a member here a few years ago.( I apologize for not remembering who. )
It has a similar tool layout as a tinker but without the small blade, toothpick and tweezers. The build quality is good,  close to but not quite as good as Victorinox.

The first order of buisness was touching the blade. A few swipes on the Fallkniven CH4 pocket stone, and it was good to go.

Updated list of fellow sufferers...

Hi Team,
I will be making my reports here (as opposed to individiual thread for badge) - Just so y'all know!!

Just as I previewed this post Lynn's entry came up
- Looks like she had the same idea (and almost the same knife) as me
- Grrrr again - Mine cost $10 (including shipping) - Probably worth $2!!
Mine is two layers slimmer. I do believe I know what your mystery layer is.
I think this is a tool worth giving solid testing to, so don't feel bad about 'duplicating' it. I look forward to seeing the horrors... err... I mean 'joys' you face using it.  :D

Thanks Lynn  :tu:
Re. Mystery layer - Yes - I think you may know  ;) :) - Planning this reveal probably in three posts time!
I predict some joys (well, at least 'OK's) - And definitely some horrors !
Also trying to work out if our knives came from the same factory - I think they probably did looking at the scissors??

First Report: Overall, size and scales
Well as you can see from the picture in my earlier post and the one below - This is a blatant Vic knock off - Grrrrr  :sa:
It has five layers and front and back tools - all of which which we will explore this month.

What immediately stands out, is its thickness - Here it is below compared to a four layer Vic (Fieldmaster)
So we know already that the tools are way, way thinner - and of course, as such, weaker

One potential postive is that back layer tools go across the whole knife - enabling a CS and Phillips on the back ......  Vic - This might be worth noting !!
There are also a couple of interesting ('mystery') tools on the back - watch this space ......  ;)

As you can see - the scales have tp and tw.
Alhough a poor implementation - check photo - As both stick out from the scales - So potential 'loss' hazard. Lynn's looks better here!
The tweezers are metal tipped - Yay - Just like discovering an old Vic!!
I used them both over the weekend - They both work OK - Quality not as good as Swiss - But they work!

So compared to last month's Squirt Challenge - This is 1-0 to the knock off!! (No tp/tw in Squirt)

Stay tuned for more tools in the next reports, also more in the Squirt vs SAK knock off Challenge

Day 5: Did some food prep today,
ByrdRench's knife cuts very well, also it can be detach from the wrench part for messy job so clean up would be easier afterward.

Day 7: ByrdRench helped me to add a key to my set.
It separated itself to two independent tools, driver & wrench, there are no other MT can do that.

Week 1 Report:

I must say ByrdRench is one of the most interesting and unique MT ever made.
While it is not light but its thin profile makes it very comfortable to carry in pocket with its built in clip.
The 8cr13mov blade isn't very long but long enough for most cutting tasks and it performs very well.
It can detach itself to two independent tools, driver/knife & wrench, there are applications such function would be very handy.
In summary every function Byrdrench offers works well as designed.
I see it as a excellent bicyclist tool, just not sure why it included a rasp .

For the 2nd week of October, I will be using a interesting key chain tool, Craftsman 45505.
All locking features, every tool and knife on the body of the handle, with the exception of the plier head, will lock into place.
This multi-tool features tools that are accessible while the tool is in its folded or closed position.

Day 9:
Working on my costume today, use 45505 to undo some #2 screws, really so the limitation of small MT.
1st the driver is suppose for #1 screws, it slips a lot on #2. The tool is small, hard to grip for some real torque.
Yeah both small and big MT can drive screws, both try them both you will feel the difference.
2nd, dealing with a lot of duct tape and double sided tape, only a good pair of scissors can do the job. Surge save the day.
3rd, need an awl to bore out two 1" holes on the life support unit, I needed the best job for the job, Alox awl done it perfectly.
4th, 45505's small blade continue to impress me.
5th, 45505 cut some heavy zip ties, no problem there.
6th, Cut some wires clearly.

Second Report: Main blade, openers
Well this CAK (ahem??) is really doing quite well so far.

As per last post the main blade is thinner - But it feels pretty strong - I have tried to bend it with moderate finger strength and it holds firm. And it works very well. As per the norm in these challenges (food prep  :) ) here it is having cut up an apple. But it does paper, wood etc etc - all very well.

The can opener is Wenger style - And even though it is not sharpened, like a Wenger - again it works very well.
See photo below ..... and before you tell me - Yes I know I am opening a can that already has a lid  - It's a test - OK !!  :)
- And yes I took the photo with the opener at the wrong end of the opened hole - This tool works towards you....

Re bottle openers - You have two!! The CO and BO/Flat SD both work reasonably well as a BO (not as good as a SAK) but fine.

So very interestingly compared to last month's Squirt Challenge - This is now 5-0 to the knock off!!
With wins on: tp, tw, main blade, can opener, bottle opener !!!
Of course compared to a real SAK it is 5-0 the other way around.

Stay tuned for the next reports: i) drivers, ii) scissors, iii) Mystery tool
There are some very interesting (and amusing) things coming up .......  :o :D
... Also more in the 'Squirt vs. SAK knock-off' Challenge

I just did something to my CAK, and it's out of the challenge.

The pin connecting the blade is either pulled free or stretched, allowing scary side-to-side blade wiggle.

Here's hoping yours fares better.
