good job and excellent thread!

but....

now it's not a Grip tilian! it's a Smooth-tilian :P ::) :D

I do like that color but I've always wanted orange for mine (for better visibility and with grip) you should see my GF "flip" the blade open (and scare the dog) she used to tease me about that! lol

True its not a "Grip"tilian anymore, but to be honest the original scales aren't really grippy enough to be called a Griptilian in the first place.

I love the feel of the new scales. I do not know if the corners would cause hot spots with prolonged or hard use. My intuition says its a possibility.

All in all I am extremely happy with the scales and am so happy I bought them. It has not left my pocket since I put it together. I tried to carry my Sebenza yesterday, but went right back to the AWT Grip within 10 minutes.

:salute: I think your new scales look great too don't blame ya for carrying it more.

if I were to carry a dedicated blade/folder (instead of a SAK) it would be my 710 :dd:

the action and response of the Grip but the feel and look of smooth goodness ::) ;)

That actually makes me want to try a Grip. Good job

Just over a month of pocket time with a quick update. Everything has been excellent with the scales and the knife. Could not be happier. Some minor wear. Nothing out of the ordinary and I would say the finish is holding up quite well since the portion of the knife that sits lowest in my pocket gets scratched by keys and other metal all day and shows very little wear.

Here is the portion that gets the most abuse.

If you look closely at the color on the scales it is darker on the top portion (in the picture) that does not contact my jeans. Does not bother me at all. I like it actually.

Some other wear. Not sure how it got chipped there, but it did.

Definately not a poor mans anything. This setup will cost you $160 - $200.

I know what you mean though.  ;)

It's too bad all the original photos from this thread are lost.

I, too, ordered a set of their "blemmished" scales, also in OD Green. I can find no blemmished, save one teeny tiny nick.

I paid $44 for the scales with all hardware and a black back spacer.

Today will be my first day of carrying.

Thanks!  The one thing I wasn't fond of with my Griptilian was the OEM frn scales.

I did like the shape a bit better than these AWT scales, but overall, it now feels like a premium knife.

I think I'll really like carrying this. Now I'll have a fight between it and my AFO II.

I am customizing my 550-1 a bit at a time, and I am still trying to decide on custom scales. These look good and the price is right.

zrxoa1 -

How are the edges on these scales? One thing that I actually like with the standard Griptilian scales is that the rounded shape with smoother edges seems to fit my hand well. I am curious how it feels when used for fairly heavy cutting chores requiring lots of pressure placed on the hand.

That thought has be also looking at some micarta and g1o scales that are shaped similar to the originals....but man...those AWTs look so professional.

Sorry, just now seeing your question...

I find the scales very comfortable. Even more so than the stockers.  But I have bigger hands than many.

They give the knife a “premium” feel. I think G10 scales would feel great as well.  I would suggest you go for the G10 scales.
