Best "sociable" SAK?
on: August 21, 2015, 12:57:32 AM
What would you say is the best sociable SAK - including for example a bottle opening, corkscrew, bread knife (aka saw), orange peeler...

Any thoughts? Thanks!

My sociable knife needed to be something I could carry in a bathing suit and I went with the Compact. Very happy with the choice!

Bathng suit carry would be waiter, compact, 84mm electrician if you need a phillips driver..

But all saks from the 58mm manager to the 91mm swisschamp to a giant 130mm Wenger are all sociable.  They are the most socially acceptable knives ever made

Gotta be the Victorinox Cheese Knife for me. Wood handled version if you like beer, plastic if wine only.

Luna Has hit the nail on the head. SAK are the most socially acceptable knives all over the world. Although I do believe any SAK with RED scales are the most acceptable. Easily recognisable and for this reason alone is why I choose to carry one.

Sheeple - waiter - small enough to get the job done but very unthreatening.

People - anything sharp the more curious the better for conversation value.

I am jealous of Smaugs cheese knife.

Here in Australia; the 111mm and 130mm must be ruled out due to the whole 'knives are scary weapons' thing.

For pocket carry, the Vic Explorer or ex-Wenger S557. If size is no object, I agree with tjfarrington on a large swisschamp... :)

Luna has it. Any red SAK is a good call. If the general age of the people is old enough to remember Mcgyver, them a Tinker might be good, otherwise a SwissChamp. It's too geek-chic not to be a conversation starter :tu:

Batam fills that role for me, however it might be the opposite of what you're looking for considering it has only a combo tool and a blade

Well, bathing suit carry for me would be no SAK at all...

As others have said the 58mm is a great "public" sak.  I've whipped out my Swisschamp without any fuss.  I also believe the red celidor scales play a huge part in the no fuss attitude towards these knives.

Sociable?

Of course, the Wenger Cigar knife! Open wine, beer even a can of olives for the hostess....not to mention file a nail or dress your cigar. Oh, and a blade to incise an orange for easy peeling....

The perfect party/picnic knife all in a compact 85mm, 3 layer size.

I've noticed that when I pull out my 08 Soldier the sheeple get nervous. When I pull out my Swisschamp "wow is that a Swiss army knife you can do anything with that". I actually had a neighbor walk away from me when I was using my Soldier because it  made her nervous.
Jeep the SAK of the auto world or is it SAK the Jeep of the Knife world?

It's got something to do with attitude, too. You can scare someone taking out a 58 SAK or use a Buck 110 without anyone raising an eyebrow (yes, I have both these knives now and will take any opportunity to mention it!).

As a rule of thumb, I'd say a SAK is acceptable almost everywhere. They're regarded as gadgets/toys more than as knives. Even sheeple like gadgets...

I think the OP is looking for socially helpful not socially acceptable.

So SAK Guy's Cigar cutter and Smaug's Cheese knife fit the brief well I think. :)  I'll throw in the Handyman.  Not only has the corkscrew, thread trimming scissors and bread knife (saw), but also has the pliers which are rather good for on the spot jewelry repairs.  :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Ah ok socially helpful.  I'd say the Explorer would be a good choice.  Make it a Explorer Plus and now we're talking.  The mag glass can be such an aid when reading very small print.  The plus scales adds pin and pen and who hasn't needed either of these items.  Scissors are terrific on the 91mm and I've cut my share of coupons and opened quite a bit with them.
