Custom Voyageur -- First Post
on: September 09, 2015, 12:58:51 AM
Hi Guys,

This is my first post on the forum.  Love it here.  I wouldn't call myself a collector really as much as an accumulator.  I have a ziploc bag of VSA knives from as far back as grade school, which was a long time ago for me.

I had been carrying an Alox Bantam that I love for its slender lightweight presence and simplicity, but decided that it would be the perfect knife for me if only it had scissors.   I think these three tools, knife, combination tool, and scissors, would get me through 98% of my needs.  The Bantam's 84 mm frame was perfect in my pocket in an office setting.

After a little investigation on this board and other places, I discovered that Victorinox made this very knife and called it the Voyageur but discontinued it years ago. I trolled eBay without any luck.  I did see a NOS Voyageur go for big bucks once  -- I bid on it but dropped out at $300.

Then I discovered Bob @ SAK Modder and asked him about adding scissors to my Bantam.  Thought I'd hit the jackpot, but unfortunately this isn't possible because VSA no longer makes scissors in the 84 mm frame size.  So I had him make the equivalent knife in a 93 mm frame.  It's beautifully made, but just a little bigger and heavier than I like to carry everyday.

One day it hit me that I still had the Golfer that I bought brand new in 1988 in Switzerland.  I loved the knife for a long time but it had landed in my bag of surplus knives when Victorinox brought out the Scientist.  I located the old Golfer, itself the kind of rare variety without the little divet tool/golfing implement thingie, and wrote back to Bob to see if he could use it as a donor knife and make me my dream Voyageur, or a Bantam + scissors.

He replied that he'd be willing to give it a try (as a rule he doesn't generally work on the 84 mm size any more) and here are the results.  I had Bob replace the knife blade and combination tool with new implements.  The scissors carry over, of course.  He was unable to use the set screws that he uses on the bigger frames because they're too long.  So he hand-riveted the scales on and did a great job.  The knife came today and it's fantastic!

Here it is next to the 93 mm knife I had him make first.

Look at the difference in thickness:

A big shout out to Bob at SAK Modder -- no relation to him or his business, just a very satisfied customer.

Thanks for looking,

Myron

Welcome, and a nice knife. Those are screw pins, not rivets. That's the way to go with Alox SAKs.

Yet again another job well done by Syph  :salute:

Congrats on two great knives.  I can see why the smaller thinner one works so well for you.  Great color too  :tu:.

Welcome Myron, love the knives. The Voyaguer is my favorite edc, but mine's not an original, it's a mod too.

Welcome bud.

Love the orange!

Funny story -- it was the only color scales Bob had in the right size, but I would've chosen it anyway!  Lovin' this knife.

And thanks for the warm welcomes you guys.  What a great forum this is!

Myron, very nice indeed. This is truly the perfect knife for every day carry. Great vision on your part, and outstanding work by Syph, it looks amazing. Are you still loving it after having it for a while now?

Yes, in fact I still love it and carry it everyday.  I keep the big one in the kitchen for opening mail, packages, or other chores, and carry the little one with me every day.

The only slight bummer is that the scissors being as old as they are are a little loose.  I knew this when I sent the donor knife to Bob, but of course its the scissors in this frame size that are as scarce as hens teeth.  They work fine but you have to apply a little lateral pressure to get the shear action.

If Victorinox ever brings this model back I will buy 10 of them.

Thanks for the comments.
