A SAK dating beginner tool in excel
on: September 16, 2015, 12:45:45 AM
First,  the information used to make this comes from many members here on this forum, I have used every scrap of data I could find, and that is only possible because people here share.  thank you.

my desire was first a filtered sheet that as you filter more and more, the date range shrinks.  I still use this, but I thought I would try a different approach.
so this sheet allows you to use a drop down, and choose "Yes" and as you continue to do this,  shrink the creation range.
this is no where near as in-depth as users like @jazzbass can determine, but for a new collector, it might be very useful.

so, how does it work,

well you have this sheet

**You may have to click the bar to make the image larger**

in the "Trait" column find a row that has a trait that your knife  has and then in the "Present?" column, click and select "Yes" from the drop down.

repeat for each trait

**ignore that "No"  in the picture,  that is not really there, but made it to my screen shot**

notice out to the right the "Age Range"  and the green "Valid Configuration"

if you select a mixture that should not exist, the sheet tries to let you know.

from our example, we have a SAK from 1983 through 1985,  but if we say it has a cybertool (that came out in 1999) the sheet warns about this and you can tell based on the date range why it does this

for those who care, Each time you select a trait,  it adds the start date of that trait to a cell, and the end date to another.
to narrow down the range, I took the MAX start date, for the lower date, and the MIN end date for the higher date.
if the start date is greater than the end date, an error is displayed.

if you are interested in this basic spreadsheet, please let me know here and I will share it through a link.
If I can help, let me know

Neat idea. I tried something sort of like that from the data/info on sakwiki, but gave up; to complicated for a flow chart approach; the spread sheet just might work well. Looking forward to trying it out.

here is the link shared via Google Drive,  if this does not work, I will put it up on Dropbox tonight when I get home.

Please download and use it,  do not let Google Docs be your viewer.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B96d3YZxO2vrNUw0WWZvTkhTVGc/view?usp=sharing

there are other tabs that allow a person to ID a SAK based on tool configuration (for most sizes of Vics anyway)
and a tab that uses the filter approach to date a SAK (the data that inspired my other sheet)

PS.  the last two "traits" that deal with Tang stamps are ONLY for 1974 and newer,  in my collection this is the vast majority of my SAKs.  there is a lot more tang info in the forum

Very cool, and useful! Thanks!

I did notice if you select "can Opener Current," the age range is 1980 - 2016.  I have several knives from the 70's with a current can opener, no "+PAT."  Or am I misunderstanding it?
If the trees blew down the wind and no one was around, would the alphabet song really go backwards?

you are correct,  all I had to go by is the data I had,  which is sometimes wrong.  good catch and info though

This is a really useful resource! Thank you for putting in the work.

Now, about the updates and small revisions; before you are starting to introduce decimal version numbers, why not make public on Google Drive with read access and everyone can use the latest version without having to update it again and again.

I can do that,  it is shared via Google docs right now,  but I will see about making it wide open to the public.

maybe tomorrow

Hey, Detron.

Just downloaded the sheet and playing with it, very cool and awesome function.  Haven't tested it with some of my dated SAKs, but this certainly is a big step forward from the last SAK 58-74-75-84-91 Identifier!  Great Job!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1li6pMLCt4TYWrqMHyAWzSJwM-LfIDDXJFfe-nIi2N-A/edit?usp=sharing

here is a new link that hopefully gives edit rights to users.

there is a tab called "Change Log"  if you make a change,  please just give info there that will help others know what was changed

the issue with using Google Docs as the editor, is it cannot handle my vertical text.  so I still recommend editing it in Excel or even Libre Office Calc.
If I can help, let me know

thanks,  all that data is from SAKWiki,  I just prefer using a filter to help narrow choices down.  it took months to make those sheets.
I am trying to learn new things and tricks in Excel, and if they become beneficial for the SAK sheet, I will include them.
If I can help, let me know

also if you un-hide  the columns that are hidden, you can see the ranges for the traits.  some people might like that better.
