Noks Biker

Manufactured in Russia by the Noks Knife company, the Biker model has a look and feel unlike any other multitool on the market today. With a simple solid build and just the basic functions - a format consistent with other products of Russian origin - the Biker has a certain ruggedness about it that is reminiscent of a bygone era.

Upon handling a Biker for the first time, the first thing one notices is how thin it is. Barely 9mm (3/8") from side to side it feels more like a single blade knife in the hand than a multi function device. See photos below, alongside a Leatherman Skeletool and a PST. Length and width are typical of other plier-type tools.

This thin profile makes the Biker an absolute dream to carry. Slipped into my back pocket I hardly even know its there. (and neither does anyone else, which can be a good thing) On the downside, squeezing hard on the pliers causes a certain discomfort to the palm of my hand. There are pros and cons, but I'll take thin over thick any day.

PLIERS:

Speaking of pliers, they are about the same size (length) on a Biker as most other full sized multitools. The thin profile mentioned earlier allows them to reach into tight areas normally considered needlenose-only territory.

KNIFE BLADE:

The knife blade has a plain edge profile, a liner lock, and a thumb stud for one-hand opening. It is a simple, business-like arrangement that gets the job done. No serrations, no S30V, no blood grooves. My only critique would be that the thumb stud is placed too close to the pivot, making it difficult at first to get the blade open. I would expect this to improve with use.

SCREWDRIVERS:

The phillips screwdriver is machined onto the end of an arm, which gives it a reasonable reach. Handy when dealing with recessed screws. The pliers have to be opened first in order to access the phillips, not unlike many other multitools past and present. Squeezing the plier handles during use prevents the phillips from folding back up.

A flathead screwdriver profile is ground onto the end of the can opener, Swiss Army Knife style. It works okay, as long as the screw head is flush to a surface. Not really a concern given how few flathead screws one encounters these days.

AWL

As a connoisseur of fine awls, I must say that this one ranks among the very best. Made of thin sheet metal so it penetrates well, yet folded into a right angle for strength, and ground to a needle tip, it would make a fine sewing awl for leather or other tough fabric. This thing is great. And the way it wraps around the plier handle made me almost not realize it was there.

SHEATH

Ooooh, I nearly forgot to mention the nice sheath mine came in. Its made of heavy leather panels sewn together with fine stiches, and a big snap closure. Just the way I like 'em.

I'm not sure if all Noks tools come with a sheath, or if mine was just the result of some hard bargaining by my Finnish negotiator.

Interesting tool/design...even though it takes up almost no space, it looks like all the impliments are "full sized"...especially that awl!

How much did this thing cost? and are there any other designs by this company? I can't find any pics on the link, it's all Russian to me!...Literally!

The pivot of that knife blade looks like with a little ingenuity you could attach a pocket clip there.

Yeah, I really like it too.

Not because its better than all the other tools - cause it isn't - but because its different from all the other tools. I like being different.

The pocket clip idea is a good one Corrugated. The thinness of the tool makes it a natural for clipping.

As regards other Noks multitools:

They do make others.

I'd like to see these tools here in some American webshops...probably cost an arm and a leg though.

Yeah, its around $150, plus shipping from halfway around the planet. $:-\$

But oh well, I would have just wasted the money on frivolous things otherwise. (like food)
