My 1st 100% hand made knife [22 pic heavy]
on: October 11, 2015, 02:21:29 PM
Hi

Started with broken piece of file that my cousin picked up on the farm, annealed it that very same evening in the braaivleis (bbq) fire.

Shaped with a bench grinder and files....ditto for the edge bevels

Worked with what I had and knew what I wanted lengthwise, but I don't think the half-tang will be an issue.
The orange Micarta is made from synthetic material I was experimenting with, and after playing with the cut offs I know this is the strongest Micarta I've made so far....

It warped a tiny bit during the heat treat, it's not that hard but it does take a good edge considering the very unrefined grind, and it just murders wood.  8)

Thank you very much, but I'm sure you could because a few months ago I couldn't either.  8)

Nice work  :tu: you said you annealed it, but didn't cover how you rehardened and tempered it  Files tend to be W2, so a quick water quench on the edge, allowing the residual heat in the spine to temper it back, (ala Kukri style treating) is the easiest way. What did you do?

Any idea how much hassle it is hosting 22 pics on TinyPic?

I heated to non-magnetic and quenched in peanut oil, the stuff is expensive and the first try I didn't have enough oil to actually cool it significantly.
Rectified that the 2nd time round, taller container and more oil, and I'm pretty happy with the result.
I didn't temper it because it's not that hard, but testing with a file satisfied me its hard enough.

I chopped cross grain into local hard wood (Camel Thorn) and the edge was still good enough to cut paper.

This is something that can be sharpened on a rock  8)

nice work. For most people knife making is either a "o that's cool, lets try it" or its in your blood. If it truly calls to you don't ever stop making. Again nice work. :tu:

As for anvils...For a knife maker the traditional European horned anvils have a features you wont necessarily use. For many smiths around the world an anvil is simply a large bock of steel mounted to a stump of some sort to give it the extra mass. Any piece of thick steel with enough surface for you to feel comfortable will work as long as you recognize the limitations of such a set up. Pieces of train track or stacked and welded chunks of forklift tine, or old weight lifting plates are common for beginners who are having difficulty finding a "proper" anvil.

I hate giving supply advise ideas internationally because I know little of local business, retail and industrial environment as it would relate to new and salvage availability. But check any metal salvage yards for suitable pieces, it is what you make of it sometimes.

Google image "improvised anvil" or "substitute anvil" and you'll see ideas from a chunk of scrap to people who have made their own anvils.

just some random guy with a stack of forklift tine pieces
Here's the link to another forum where google found this photo, their are several others shown in the thread.

Hi Noa

Thank you very much, I've looked at alternatives but couldn't find anything suitable......forklift tines are a new one for me, and I might be able to make a plan!

Your concern for local industry is noted and appreciated but not necessary  :D
I know of one old rusty anvil for sale locally for US$1000.....way more than I can afford.
I know of one other my friend tried to buy on my behalf, the owner laughed and refused

Where I grew up they ripped up the switch yard so there were tons of track bits and tie plates. I started on a foot of track and a friend used a tie plate.  We never lacked for spikes either.  Those were the days. Now you'd get arrested for looking at a rail bed even a decommissioned one.
