Anyone listening to podcasts?
on: September 11, 2025, 09:52:57 AM
I've never been a big podcast guy, but I do watch a lot of the Adam Savage Tested stuff on YT, and also the Mythfits stuff by Kari Byron and Tory Belecci.  I watch them mostly on YT as well rather than subscribing to any traditional podcast services.

I'm wondering what kinds of podcasts everyone listens to, how and where you listen to them, what source you get them from etc.

I have found very interesting podcasts on the Jonbenet Ramsey and Natalie Wood cases.  The subject matter is not for everyone, though.

Yeah, that kind of thing just angries up my blood.

Megan likes to listen to murder podcasts to help fall asleep.  Mostly I tune them out but one she was listening to was extremely graphic and disturbing.

I woke up to use the washroom in the middle of the night and lay awake listening to it for the longest time.  Not my best night.

I used to listen to a lot of podcasts when my commute was longer and my hours weirder. Not quite as much now.

I've tried one or two of the true crime podcasts. Never really saw the appeal. My wife is a huge fan on The Glass Cannon, which is an RPG podcast. I listen sometimes and think they can be hit and miss. They have a large cast and it never seems like all the people I like are on at the same time/all the people I dislike off at the same.

Limetown is a classic. Fictional story about a high tech "company town" disappearing. Great production values. The second season was poor, and I think I read they George Lucased the first a bit after, but probably still worth it.

Lore is pretty good. Creepy mythology/folklore. I found it got kind of repetitive after listening to too many, but if I just need something to put on in the car it's a good backup.

My current favorite is probably Philosophize This! which is pretty much what it sounds like. I like that it's solo. Too many podcasts try to use several hosts and just wind up talking over each other. Well researched, and not too "haughty" like a lot of podcasts can be.

Like most things online, if you dig around you can also find some small time podcast by a couple people who are very passionate and interesting (if not as well produced as the big name ones). The biggest problem with them (again, like a lot of the internet) is that you run the risk of them just disappearing halfway through a season and leaving you hanging. When are we starting up the MTO podcast?

Techwise, I mostly listen on my phone using AntennaPod (I try to go open source when I can). If you have a topic or title it can pull them from several major aggregators. Most podcasts also have a direct RSS address you can just plug in.

Like BP, I used to commute a long ways and time (52 miles each way, the return trip with traffic in the Seattle Metro area was often 2.5/3 hours) and learned to love podcasts.

I'll skip the political ones I love, but one I always recommend to people are Heaven's Gate and American Skyjacker....these aren't every day ones just one off projects but so good.

For ones that come out regularly my favorite non political is probably DarkNet Diaries about InfoSec and hacking.

I'm very picky when it comes to podcasts. If the host has an annoying voice or mannerisms, I can't deal with it. Same with ones that can't stay on topic, or take forever to get on topic.
Having said that, some of my favorites are:
Scamfluencers: It's about how people use their popularity and influence to scam others out of their money
What Went Wrong: A podcast about how hard it is to make movies, let alone good ones. Goes into the background of some of the biggest flops, hits, and the ones in between
Purple Stuff Podcast: Sort of a nostalgia, pop culture podcast put on by Matt from DinosaurDracula.com and Jay from SludgeCentral.com. This is probably my favorite of the bunch, mainly because of the chemistry between the two hosts.

I listen to Art of Manliness podcast when ever I have time or if I'm going on a road trip.
May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.
