As winter approaches every year and things start to get colder I start to think about moving to a warmer climate.  I hate crowds though, and being mashed into an airplane for that long means I sure as heck wouldn't come back, so I'd have to be a permanent resident of wherever I go.  I'm too dumb to learn a new language, too picky an eater to go somewhere without a steady supply of beef....

Living in a relatively small town in Oz sounds like it might not be such a bad idea.  Provided I can keep my guns.  I'm going to need them for your spiders....

If you move to a small town in Oz you might be able to keep some of your guns, but unless you are a really crack shot spiders are hard to kill with regular bullets.  Shotguns on the other hand can get the job done, and they are also much more effective when dealing with our snakes

They vary in size, but the venom in the babies can sometimes be stronger than in the adults.  The really big snakes are non-venomous pythons.  Most of our snakes just want to be left alone to do their own thing, but an unpleasant exception to this concept are tiger snakes - they have been known to chase after people who are running away 

As to whether 5 rounds is enough ...... well that depends on how good a shot you are (when you are surprised and scared)

I saw a TV programme where someone was removing 5 or so baby Eastern Browns from a pool filter... I can't remember if it was these or some others on the show but they said the venom would kill you in about 14 minutes.

It's funny how the grass no longer seems that much greener on the other side.

I used to think NZ was the place to be, many years later I got into fly fishing and was exposed to the country thanks to the website/forum that helped me get started in a knowledge vacuum....
Then came the LOTR movies......how can you NOT want to move to NZ??

My impression is the politics in NZ and Australia are worsening by the day, and I would only be interested  if I could live remotely, away from all the BS.
I can't afford to do that HERE, how would that be different elsewhere....

First time poster, long (well not really) time reader here from Australia. I live in Melbourne, out in the east on the edge of the bush and suburbia. Great place to live, however the previous poster who said our politics was going to smurf was 100% on the mark. (Also a quick fact, carrying a multi tool in public without a valid excuse is illegal - 'possession of a controlled weapon'. You could be carrying a classic or a 6ft machete, and the penalty is still the same (depending on how the cop is feeling at the time))

Yep, in the 20 years I have lived on the left side of the Tasman sea the BS factor here has skyrocketed.
When I moved here it was a lot less OTTPC (over the top politically correct).
You could walk into K Mart and buy a shotgun over the counter. The only paperwork you needed was a handful of cash.
These days it has gone so far "the other way" that Australia is one of the few countries in the world where Airsoft "guns" are illegal and possession of such is punishable by heavy fines and/or imprisonment. Airsoft "ammunition" i.e. 6mm plastic balls are a prohibited import and are confiscated by customs if detected in the post.

Seriously, if I could fund the move and living I would move back to somewhere in Godzone (NZ). Anywhere but Auckland.  For some reason Nelson appeals.
I dunno, maybe it's the bourbon talking but if I win a chunk of money I'll be living there rather than here.

I was a bit shocked when I read that too - I thought I had checked this recently and under 3 inches (ie a SAK) was OK
But checked again (for New South Wales)  - And you are correct
I think the 3 inches is the UK law

Here is the extract:

11C   Custody of knife in public place or school
(1)  A person must not, without reasonable excuse (proof of which lies on the person), have in his or her custody a knife in a public place or a school.
Maximum penalty: 20 penalty units or imprisonment for 2 years, or both.
(2)  Without limitation, it is a reasonable excuse for the purposes of this section for a person to have custody of a knife, if:
(a)  the custody is reasonably necessary in all the circumstances for any of the following:
(i)  the lawful pursuit of the person’s occupation, education or training,
(ii)  the preparation or consumption of food or drink,

Well I am still going to carry my SAKs and MTs
I think the 'without reaosnable excuse' clause is the saviour

And of course i) a cop who is in a reasonable mood, ii) an individual (me) who is accommodating, subservient, apologetic and understanding if stopped iii) A non threatening knife - Surely a SAK would be OK?, iv) Not carrying the SAK in a potentially dangerous place/time - eg To a night club, football match, late at night etc v) Not flaunting the tool/knife

If all else fails...

Me: "I am sorry sir, but I usually carry one to cut up an apple with my lunch"
Cop: "Well where is the apple?"
Me: "I ate it sir"

In my case this is usually true every day - So can be said complelety seriously and honestly??

G'Day,

I carry a LM on my belt every day. I'm a train driver and can, and do use it almost daily - for work that is.

I also have a modded Flair in my lunch-box which is for food prep - and as Huntsman, I have an apple every day. I have never been stopped or searched whilst in uniform. We often have police on the trains and on the platforms, and the only time I have been asked about my MT was from an interested cop that also had one on his belt. That day I was carrying a MUT. I explained the purpose of the tool and he really liked it. We parted as friends, he still says "g'day" when he sees me.

As stated , it depends on the cop and MORE SO on your attitude. If you pull the idiot-meter in the red, yes they will through the book at you.

When I'm not in uniform it will depend on the activities we engage in. If off-roading or on the dirt bikes, MT's are lying about or on our persons, never had any problems. At BBQ's I'll carry my C33T pocket knife, but then it is used for food prep only. I do not take it to events where we are searched, in saying that when the Monster Jam trucks was out here a couple of weeks ago and I had a SAK Midnight Manager in my pocket, again no problems.

Unfortunately our society is starting to get regulated to the lowest common (idiot) denominator, and with that, we are loosing a lot of our common sense abilities and freedom we used to have.
