Please recommend me a folder.
on: August 20, 2008, 07:42:46 PM
At some point in the near future, I am hoping to get a new one handed folder.  I could do with some recommendations though.

What I am after is the following;

A 3"-4" blade,
Clip or drop point,
Plain edge,
Thumb stud opening,
Locking (preferably not a liner lock),
and at a price of under £100 (approx $200) including shipping.

I am looking for something which is incredibly strong and over engineered.  I don't want to be worrying about using it.

Anyone have any recommendations?
I'm back!!

Ofcourse there are many choices, but i can help you with this model, a like new SOG Sogwinder from the nineties.
A blade thick like a tire iron, yet with a very nice point, and a mid-backlock that locks up like a bankvault.
The entire grip is made from stainless steel and has Kraton inlays.

Make me an offer i can't refuse  :D

The American Lawman from Cold Steel could be a good choice:

http://www.heinnie.com/Xn98fe633128/Knives/Cold-Steel/Cold-Steel-American-Lawman/p-92-127-2876/

Another candidate could be the Kershaw Cyclone (i know, you said no liner locks, but it has a very good price  :D):

One of the best tough and over engineered knives I've used is the Benchmade 520 Presidio.

3.4" blade of 154CM
8.5" overall length
Axis Lock
Very useful drop point blade shape
http://benchmade.com/products/product_detail.aspx?model=520

I've been very pleased with mine and it's never let me down. You can find then on eBay for under $100 USD if you keep a look out.
Here is a pic of my "VERY" well used 520...

If you're not dead set on a thumbstud also take a look at a Spyderco Paramilitary. Also a great rock solid knife. Very nice large, hand filling handle but not a huge blade. S30V steel. Great compression lock. It's priced right around $100 USD if you shop around as well. Quick pic of my Para...

Having said all that dunc is right...... get a Seben.... Ohh never mind  ;)

The Lawman is actually one on my list.  So is the AK-47.

Have you handled a Lawman?  Are they as tough as they claim?

I think you win the 5.30 am award for exaggeration.

I recommend you get a CRKT M16.

I've never used one, but they sure look nifty.
