I must say, I thought I’d never like this model, but I really do, after having it for a bit now. I changed scales to emerald, and they’re gorgeous, but I miss the red, so I ordered another. Don’t tell my wife. Here’s the beauty. Goes really well with tan paracord.

I felt the same way but I love it now.  It's like a larger Classic.  It fits the bill for a real EDC.

Yes indeed. Perhaps my Climber will get a similar treatment...if I can shake the desire for a blue or yellow 91mm SAK.

Proud owner of a Compact for the first time!
With the Huntsman and the Explorer, I feel a first cycle of SAKs is complete.
I will try to carry it for some weeks straight to see how it is to have a knife without the awl.

I picked this one up last week. The seller had it listed as a Golfer, but I think it's an early Compact.

It has a tool set that the SAKWiki entry for the Golfer says doesn't exist - combo tool with hook, pen, and pin. SAKWiki says the hook, pen, and pin appeared when the combo tool was replaced with the divot repair tool. Mine also has a non-grooved corkscrew and riveted scissors, so it's a newer model.

And the entry for the Compact says:
The other model was the very first Compact which retained the features of the previous Golfer but added the hook and a straight pin. The nail-file would be added to the hook sometime later.

Mine doesn't have the nail file.

If there are any Compact experts who can tell for sure, I'd love to know.

But regardless of what it is, I like the tool set so am happy with it.

I’m no expert, but I do know that there were Golfers in the configuration you describe. I own a NIB example, and the box is labeled “Golfer.”

I’m curious whether the “Compact” name was used in the European market first. A British friend gifted me a Compact —its box was labeled as such—in 1996, and I do not recall it having a hook w/file. (In fact, I don’t remember a hook at all, but my memory isn’t always reliable, and I wasn’t paying attention to the finer points of SAK anatomy at the time.)
