SAK Officer ?
on: August 16, 2008, 07:42:40 AM
In my comparison photos with the KF4 I used this SAK as a comparison , I thought it was a Officer as that is what is on the blade . Nomad had not heard of this model , can any one confirm ?  BTW I have had this SAK for about 8yrs & have treated it roughly , I am not very kind to SAK's main blade tips  :-[ this one is bent & my Pioneer's tip is broken & I think that is my I prefer  :multi: to  :sak:  ::)                                                                                              http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/multitools/af80c617.jpg[/img]]                                 http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/multitools/f4594301.jpg[/img]]                                   http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/multitools/ea6807e6.jpg[/img]]

"Officer" isn't really a model name,  more of a category which pretty much includes all cellidor SAKs.
There is a "Soldier" model, but no "Officer" model.

That one is a Huntsman.

I've seen Officer used a few times, (I think maybe on that site that resells SAKs taken at Airports?)

Anyway, here's a link to someone else talking about Officer SAK

http://www.pizzini.at/info_sak_engl.htm

(If you don't want to read the article, it boils down to "In 1897 Karl Elsener patented the Spartan Model for the Fancy-Pants who wanted something more than a Soldier" )

Pondering further on the idea of "Officer's Knife"

What is everyone's favourite "traditional" SAK? (given my tender age, to me this means a Cellidor Model between 81 & 93mm with 1 to 3 layers, rather than wood handled soldiers, which some of the fogies here might consider to be exemplary of the times when they were whippersnappers)

The Tinker, of course! Nothing has ever served me so well.

I do like the hook so the Deluxe Tinker is next on my list... but I don't really like scissors on my SAK.
Got those frog legs.

The category "Officer's knife" would include all 84mm and 91mm cellidor knives.

My favorite "traditional" SAK would probably be the Ranger.  The Yeoman ranks up there as well but it is, sadly, a discontinued model.

I am at the point where my favourite SAK seems to change about 3 times a day...   :ahhh :D

The Ranger is pretty great though. I have been carrying one for the last few days, and it is incredibly handy to have both a file and saw. The back side tools are also pretty decent, though I have used many of them yet. The small screwdriver and chisel should prove useful at some point though.

Another big favourites of mine is the Explorer. The inline phillips is great and what I originally bought it for. Now I am addicted to the magnifier too though! I am now even considering buying a separate magnifying glass or loupe for pocket carry.

The way I see it is more in terms of balancing my favourite layers with what I find comfortable for pocket carry. Ideally, I'd want blades, openers, scissors, saw, file, and the phillips/magnifier layers, but I often find that way too much for everyday pocket carry, depending upon what I am wearing.

Now, if I only could get all that in 84 or 85mm...

I really like the Super Tinker…but the Fieldmaster (basically a S.Tinker plus a saw)  is really intriguing me.

If the Ranger had a phillips driver, I''d snatch one up in a heartbeat.

I'd rather the phillips than the corkscrew on the Ranger too, but I am ok with the phillips on the can opener...

I find it hard to see past the Compact or the Trailmaster. They are my everyday SAKs.

For a larger knife, I like the Explorer or the Troubleshooter, although I find them a bit heavy for EDC.

+1 on the Tinker!

Tinker's been my faithful EDC for 25+ years, so it must be my favorite SAK.

The Vic designers really outdid themselves when they came up with the Tinker.  I just can't see any improvements to be made to the basic Tinker design and implement selection - it's nearly perfect as is.

The only current production SAK that might replace Tinker as my EDC is the OH-GAK/OHT.

(OH-GAK/OHT is really an overgrown Tinker with a locking mainblade and bottleopener, but with a woodsaw instead of Tinker's second small blade.)

If I needed a woodsaw I'd be in the woods, not the city. Silly you, that's not EDC! :D

But really though, if I go camping or out somewhere woodsy or whatnot I leave the Tinker and bring a Farmer.

FARMERS ALL THE WAY~

My OHT went to my sister, anyhow. ::)

Yeah, I've been EDCing my OH-GAK (back pocket carry) IN SPITE of its woodsaw.

Everything else about the OH-GAK is just so wonderful that I can tolerate having a woodsaw on my urban EDC.

Although OH-GAK is a superb SAK for the great outdoors, I really wish Vic would make a thinner version minus the woodsaw - that'd be my ideal EDC.
